Something happened today at Tim Hortons that amused me. Something very Canadian.

This particular Tims had an area for customers to wait for service. There were two cashiers working and the waiting space was roped down the middle and there was a sign that said something like LINE-UP SPLIT FOR TWO CASHIERS.

Can you guess what happened?

This little topic is still open btw.

What happened is that only one line was formed. Canadians are too polite to form a second line, thinking they might look like they're trying to cut the first, longer line.

Muddy give me your jelly beans. I won them fair and square.

Exactly right - one line only. One empty lane.

First Come First Serve (FCFS) is a core Canadian belief - particularly at an institution like Tim Hortons. Two separate line-ups flies in the face of that. Someone could be waiting at one side for a bunch of custom sandwiches to be prepared - while the other side is flying along with single coffee orders.

It's no good. The only correct option ---> one line only. FCFS.

Canadians at Tim Hortons are not jockeying for position - they are carefully self-policing so as not to go out of turn.

I like that a lot. FCFS is a core belief of mine. It hurts my soul when I pick the wrong line.

Canada sounds like the opposite of Asia. Boy, they don't think twice before barging in front of you. In fact, if you're taking more than, like, ten seconds buying a train ticket because you're confused, they're likely to just shoulder you out of the way of the window and take your place. It's pretty impressive.

Many Tim Hortons are completely idiotic in layout. There are no service lanes at all, no indication of what customers should do. There is just a counter with a couple or 3 people serving and a bunch of unstructured floor space. People come in - sometimes through a couple of doors from different directions - and form a mass of humanity.

Make no mistake, they are very busy at times, these Tim Hortons. There is every chance for mayhem and havoc.

I'm sure it must happen sometimes but I can't recall an incident.
