I am here to express an opinion.
I am hearing a lot of talk from sports media these days about the need to change the NHL draft lottery format - because a lot of fans are cheering for the "wrong" team these days.
i.e. - fans of teams near the bottom are openly cheering for their team to lose, hoping to get the best lottery position they can.
It is my opinion that you don't need to change the rules because of simpleton dipshits. There is nothing you can do about simpleton dipshits. They are out there now and they will continue to be out there no matter what you do.
If someone in Buffalo wants to cheer for a 20% shot at the first pick rather than 16.6 (or whatever), let them. They are probably not going to get it anyway but who cares - if nothing else, it shows they care. That's a good thing.
The fundamental idea of the worst teams getting the best shot at the highest picks is sound. Particularly since it has become borderline impossible to get free agents or make trades.
Muddying the waters with the lottery is the best you can do. The fact that this is the year of Connor McDavid is irrelevant. Fans did the same nonsense in the year of Nail Yakupov and they will do the same thing next year and it happens in other sports (come on team, let's tank for Anthony Bennett!) and it matters very little who is available. People are hysterical and stupid and woefully predictable.
You can make it that the worst 5 or 7 or 10 teams get an equal shot - but then, apart from sacrificing the good principle of the worst teams getting the best shot - you will still get the same tanking dipshittery except it will be from fans of teams just outside the block to drop down into it.
Dipshits gonna dipshit.
