Given that I have absolutely no inside information, my feeling is that Brodeur is the one being a dick, not the Devils.

I feel like it all comes down to his lack of recognition of it being over, and thinking his ass should be kissed in the form of playing time. I imagine the Devils were willing to honor him and employ him and whatever - but no, you can't keep playing in net for us. We are trying to be the best possible team here, not a charity.
