It's a news story because she's head of the Spokane NCAAP

She absolutely held out that she was black and filled out various forms and applications to that effect. She heads a chapter of the NAACP (at least as of a couple days ago.)

She is now denouncing her parents for saying otherwise.

My interpretation: she sorta seems like she is hoping to be the Caitlynn Jenner of being what you believe you are - except with race in her case. The obvious difference is she has not "come out" in a forthright manner - she has been weaselly for a long time and now she has been busted.
