He is officially accepting some science that religion has a long history of denying - and many religious loonies still do.
Sometimes things get to the point where you have to do an about-face or just look too stupid - such as the church did after it was impossible to claim any longer that the universe revolves around the earth - whoops, sorry about all those people we tortured and killed over that, guise.
So now he is taking a sensible view on evolution and Big Bang, basically saying they happened but god was overseeing the whole thing.
All those stories in the bible about god making everything happen by basically waving a magic wand? Not so much.
Was that so hard?
