I find caffeine does that job for me. Any bad side effects?

I think I'll stick with the coffee.

oh poler i didnt see you already identified what he was talking about

coffee??? are you serious????

I never noticed any side effects, although of course with any and all new drugs you always want to proceed with very very careful caution, especially when planning on taking them semi-regularly.

When you research drugs like these (and many others) its amazing how accidentally they discover them and how truly little they know about how and why they work. So thats why you have things like anti depressants that are so widely prescribed but still so poorly understood, and why you have things like every addictive drug known to man, at one point having been seen as a non-addictive panacea

So I would say that by far the biggest risk is that these drugs are so new and work on such fundamental and poorly understood aspects of the brain that the chances that later on they will discover some downsides, possibly serious, that they didnt anticipate are roughly 100%

It's amazing how poorly understood sleep and sleep patterns still are

But, if you do have sleep issues that affect your life, or have small periods of time where you'd like to have more control over your need to sleep, they are probably ok

It was more tongue in cheek about the fact that you take something for a relatively minor ailment which if it doesn't kill you might end up making you kill yourself.

I agree about the accidental nature of the "discoveries". A lot of the time, a ton of money is put into research for a product that doesn't make it but has a side effect which cures something else - "OK, this doesn't cure prostate cancer but it works wonders on shift work disorder". Case in point - Thalidomide appears to cure myeloma. Unbelievable.
