There was a special on tv awhile ago about Aussies getting scammed by dodgy Spanish real estate agents. They'd take some sort of finders fee to supposedly find a decent house for you but then they'd start tacking all of these other astronomical fees on top of it and sometimes there wasn't even a house for sale.

Now it makes sense why so many from here were trying to buy in Spain.

Not that simple. It's a 7 year process. Buying real estate gives you a long term visa. After a couple of months on this visa you can apply for permanent residence, there are two types of permanent residence, temporary and citizen. You would apply for a temporary one, you can live there, get DNI, etc, expires in two years, its not a work permit though so you need to prove you're sufficient. After two years of continuous living you can apply for the other kind that grants you full rights, then it's like 5 year wait time, continuously living, taxes, language, etc. Before you can apply for citizenship.
