I've never ever watched Star Trek. I've seen it on TV a million times, but it never hooked me for even a second. I've seen both JJ Abrams movies, which I thought were unremarkable.
If one were willing to start exploring the Star Trek TV series right now, where would one start?
Based on impressions and vibes and my knowledge of the product, I don't think you'd like it. I don't see an "in" for you.
It is seldom great writing per se. The acting is often atrocious. It just has a thing that appeals to a certain personality type which I have not seen in you. If you had it, you would probably know by now.
Hope that doesn't sound condescending. Just the opposite - I think you're above it.
But yeah, TNG would be the most logical starting point I can think of. Not that I think it's the best; as I said earlier, I rate Voyager and DS9 higher, but all the foundational stuff is laid out in TNG.
