Can you please post the lyrics? My ears seem to be mentally challenged and I can't understand what you are singing.

I don't think it is your ears. I find the sound atrocious when I try to record anything with piano. Everything gets out of whack. In real life while I am recording that, I am playing the piano as quietly as I possibly can - while singing very loud. It would seem unnatural and weird to anyone sitting here but my camera does weird things with the levels and then it distorts.

I’m in the Universe

I’m in the universe
I’ve been away for awhile
Left without saying goodbye
I’m back in the universe

I’m in the universe
Don’t wanna make a big fuss
I slipped in the side door and I’ll just sit quietly
Here in the universe

I’m in the universe
Doing the best that I can
Just a little unsteady and unsure
Here in the universe

Just a little unsteady and unsure – but not unhappy
Here in the universe.

I really appreciate the feedback, particularly about emotional responses. I don't realize how depressing I am being. In my head, this song is actually about good news and is quite optimistic and so it is good to understand the discrepancy in how it may be perceived.

Sorry to be depressing but, given the larger vision I have, that is actually very encouraging to hear. I can work with that.

I didn't find the song particularly sad. The lyrics were somewhat upbeat by my interpretation, but yeah I guess the melody is a little deceiving in that regard.

Anyway, I like what you are doing here. I have a question though. You joke about Gilmour adding some leads... do you not play guitar leads? If not, why might I ask? It seems like most people start out playing chords and never quite get a comfort level with leads. Maybe I just did everything backwards, because I started out playing blues scales and now all I can do well is pick through scales. I've been playing off and on for 10 or 12 years and I still can't put together any decent chord progressions on my own, but I can lay down some pretty mean licks.

Muddy, are you an REO Speedwagon fan? Whenever I hear new songs my "ear" makes connections to songs that I'm familiar with. This may sound off the wall, but after thinking about it for a minute I am getting a strong connection to the piano in "Can't Fight This Feeling".

No, leads are definitely not my thing. Since I was ~11, I have only had a 12-string acoustic guitar which is mainly a strumming instrument. I have let myself be lazily satisfied with banging away at that.

My intention is to get an electric guitar sometime soon and start learning and working at it. I'll write/play the leads myself if I have to. I would be happier to have someone else do them for me, just as I would be happier to have someone else do all the instrumentation including the piano and acoustic guitar parts. I have all kinds of ideas for instrumentation that are beyond my current ability. I really just want to sing. But I don't know if that will all work out.

It's a pretty big project I have in mind. Between writing, arranging and recording, it may take a couple years.

I can't say I am a big REO Speedwagon fan, although I know that song. Needless to say, if I ever had a song that became that well known, I would be a happy chappy.

Dude! You like REO?!?!? They're only my most favoritest favorite band in the entire world! I even have a guitar pick from Kevin Cronin because I magically ended up on the same Northwest flight as them one evening. I do much of the same, attaching new compositions I hear with something familiar, but I didn't pick up on Can't Fight This Feeling until you said something. Nice catch, and excellent taste in music to boot.

Hey, anybody want to start up an REO Speedwagon cover band? Can't hurt to ask.
