talkin' sports

god, how i enjoy seeing jose valvomit blow detroit games. if tigers advance now, verlander won't see the mound until game 3 of alcs. in the words of the dear departed loel passe, "now you chunkin' in there, jose!"

got my 5-hour energy drink ready for saturday night so i can stay up to watch my fightin' texas aggies take on la tech. was thinking about betting over 74 early, but a bit of a pussy to bet over 80 now.

most remarkable thing about the st. louis cardinals the past two seasons? they've only had their top two starters pitching together for the past few weeks.

dribble-dribble-dribble. best part about the mlb season drawing to a close is it means college hoops is just around the corner.

van wilks friday night at gruene hall. for those of you who think that has nothing to do with sports, you have obviously never seen the pretty young thangs that often tend bar at gruene hall.

I never understood why you have to use your closer in the 9th inning. Like if you are team is up 3-2 in the 7th and the other team has bases loaded with 2 outs why can't you use your best pitcher to get you out of a jam. Because you may not have a lead in the 9th to protect.

Because closers want to start the 9th inning and get easy saves.

wasn't always that way, saulty. i don't even remember hearing or using the word closer until around 1990. your best relievers used to come in and pitch the final 2-3 innings before that. check out this boxscore from 1978 (http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/1978/B07290NYA1978.htm). gossage actually had a 7-inning relief stint that season.

a little late, but welcome back

you were missed

What say do they have in telling the staff no I don't want to get my hands dirty now?

I agree but closers are nutjobs. The year when K-Rod won the CY, he earned every save by coming in at the start of the inning. It's how the game has evolved, and not necessarily for the better.

Baybud - I remember the term Closer used in the early 80s with Sutter.

The Red Sox tried this in 2003, to begin the season, the results were a disaster.
