I remember you once telling a pretty detailed history about forumville legend, JJGold.

He has 173K+ posts at the old place.

Would you mind recapping the different phases he has gone through.

When you have time, of course.

Who me?

I'm trying to think what you might mean. I need some prompting. He's just one of a zillion idiots from my internet past.

I had him on ignore for years at SBR - haven't seen a jjgold post for prolly 7-8 years?? - so I kinda feel like I know him less than most. I know he started doing videos at some point. I've never seen one.

Now I didn't have him on official ignore when I was mod - although I would frequently skim over him.

Well lemme see . . .

I saw his shtick starting around 2003 (??) He would go from forum to forum. Just a very needy, basically useless guy who wanted people to think he was pretty great and had done interesting things. He would create ghosts that would confirm his stories and tell him he was pretty goshdarn neat. Real people would also join in - Fishhead comes to mind - Raiders ??? - and there would be an unwritten agreement that they would all go along with each other, and exchange flattering lies. They all posted so much - plus other simpletons would chime in and get their asses kissed and feel great about that and join in - until entire forums were dominated with tales of things that jjgold was pretending to have done.

The goal, as far as I could ever tell, was love. When I first saw it, I assumed he was a tout or was in some way selling something. But over time, I came to understand he was just profoundly needy. An apologist for him could call it a calculated strategy to someday get paid for posting - but it's not true. That was just a flukey side-effect.

The actual stories were circular and repeating. One I recall was getting a job offer at a sportsbook and going to Jamaica or wherever to negotiate a deal (which never came together for various zany reasons). That repeated like clockwork in the time I saw him.

When I was a mod at SBR I saw this from behind the scenes. Like one time he created a ghost that befriended a bunch of posters but then ended up doing something dastardly. I would have to rack my brain to remember what exactly the story was. Anyway this villainous character ended up being up to no good!

But then jjgold rides in and exposes whatever-it-was.

JJgold ---> forum hero! Except it was all made up. Just jj talking to himself.

I recall in the early days of the forum when activity was slow he would spend entire days talking back and forth to ghosts (himself), pumping himself up.

He was boring as hell to me and pretty much wrecked whatever forum he decided to leech onto. It was like trying to have a good conversation in the middle of a monkey cage. But he was (and still is?) a hero to simpletons.

I am very surprised he only has that many posts with the jjgold handle. I would have guessed a million.

One way his shtick changed over the time I observed him: at first he purported to actually know something about gambling. Anybody who knew anything could see otherwise, but the gullible majority was fooled. He represented as having been seriously successful at some indefinite time.

Over time though it became untenable and he shifted to more of a lovable loser angle.

must be disillusioning being a mod

To say the least. We were starting a brand new forum and I had such lofty ideas about the highest possible level of industry discussion combined with wit and humor.

I did not know that jj had been hired until day 1. :fok:

In retrospect, I do not blame sbrjohn. With his revenues dependent on his members losing money, who better than jj to lower the collective IQ of the place?

But yeah, disillusioned is a pretty good word for what I was.

I don't see why people are willing to excuse things because they may increase revenue in some way. Sbr had opportunity to do something pretty cool. I understand opting for money when you're about to go broke. But the perceived need for endless growth is a bunch of buuuuulshit.

I was ridiculously idealistic going into that. I barely recognize the person that I was.

And sbrjohn was not totally villainous and cynical in his approach. He did hire me and all I ever did was spread good information about taking money from his sponsors. He hired me twice. He never fired me - I quite twice.

Also, I don't think his hiring jj was a calculated move to lower the composite IQ and make more money. I think John was just the sort of unsophisticated dope who sincerely found jj entertaining.

Some people do. In fact some people whom I don't consider unsophisticated or dopey at all say they like jj. I don't see it but to each their own.

John though ---> definitely unsophisticated and dopey.

jj actually quit at one point in the early days. ~ 6 months in ??? It is strictly theory on my part but I believe it had a lot to do with him being so marginalized. The forum actually did become a gathering place for people with some knowledge to gab and strategize - and his shtick was getting pushed out of the way. He would earn eyerolls if not open mocking - which was not completely new to him - but at more persistent levels.

Ultimately though he did come back and the fact is, if you are willing to post all day every day - and your opposition is people who are only using the forum as a tool and are actually placing bets and working and having familes/lives etc. - the obsessive-compulsive poster, particular with a couple like-minded friends, will be able to shape the forum.

And that is what happened.

I do recall times when he was talking to ghosts to pump himself up - very flattering ghosts - and we knew 100% the ghosts were him because of admin privileges - and people on the forum would say, "Dude, what's up with the ghosts?" - and he would swear the ghosts were not him - and sometimes he would throw in there that, sure, he had used ghosts in the past - but that was all behind him now - and he would pay $50,000 or whatever if anybody could prove he was using ghosts.

But he was using ghosts.
