Thanks everyone for the nice comments.

I am pretty good at memorizing lyrics if I set my mind to it. But with a song like that where it's not fresh in my mind and I only prepped for maybe 45 minutes, I want the lyrics and chords in front of me. I don't know if I actually looked at them while I was recording but it's a security blanket.

I have a songbook with a bunch of lyrics/chords and I guess I'll stick Rocket Man in there now.

I have not been high for a good many years. But taking a close look at this song as I have in the last day has made me wonder: is it about an astronaut as it appears on the surface or is it really about the experience of an addict?

I was always under the impression this song was about drug addiction but you bring up a good point in maybe Elton John wants to be an astronaut. Who wouldn't want to be one?

The idea that it is about rock star fame makes a lot of sense too. Elton was known for acting wild and flamboyant on stage so, I'm not the man they think I am at home makes sense in that context. It's lonely out in space could be talking about being on the road.

The only drawback to that theory is the words were written by Bernie Taupin who was not living the rockstar life. However it could just come from imagination. He was not an astronaut either so if it is in fact just a fanciful story about an astronaut, it would be the product of imagination.

Then again, both Elton John and Taupin are gay and I don't think they had come out of the closet at that time so maybe that is part of the disenfranchisement being discussed.

Or maybe they were both big Roger Clemens fans.
