Betting has been my only source of income since 2002.

On further reflection that's not true. I had a paid side-gig as a mod at SBR forum for a total of about 6 months (??). I know most people here will be surprised to learn that I was an SBR mod at one time but it's true.

Mudcat -

how much did you "start" with

and have you ever gotten stiffed?

In terms of bankroll, I started with nothing.

Well obviously that's not exactly right; what I started with was credit. I had some space on a couple of credit cards and I sent that offshore and started betting with that. I didn't start out thinking okay this is what I'm going to do full-time indefinitely. But I got some funds offshore and started playing and kept learning more and more about the game. I discovered a forum (Covers) and some helpful people. There were incredible opportunities at that time that no longer exist. I focused on bonuses and arbing at the start. My level of aggression increased. I found ways to get more lines of credit so I could take advantage of what I was seeing. And I built from there.

I have not gotten stiffed. I have come close. I had some money in BETonSPORTS sister books when the shit hit the fan, but I got bailed out at CRIS. Americans in that situation were not so lucky.

I also went through some very nervous times at Action Bets but that did work itself out. I think that's it for me regarding stiffness - although I feel like I'm forgetting something. Hmmmm, I might have more on that if my memory kicks in.

Mr.Monkey, you need to settle down! You almost scared Mr.X off the forum the other day, when you made that awkwardly gay reference towards his cock. :mattyrain:

It was only meant as a compliment in a figurative way and was happy for MrsX!

Now you Blitty on the other hand with those literal actions you took towards RJ's cock last night! And RJ probably wasn't scared at all. And then enticing Bread to come up and be the third player in your twisted game.

Next thing you suggest all GL posters move up to Greenwich Village! Where do you think these guys came from?

I'm terrified! Good looking people like yourself aren't usually sick bastards!

Muddy how could you not get stiffed? I have been stiffed and I think I"m pretty careful. Mind you it's only been for small amounts so it didn't hurt me at all. The closest I got to being REALLY stiffed was being the guy who got the last check from big juicy odds for 5K, when that cleared I felt a great relief....

I don't know what to tell you. Back in the days I was playing more at riskier books, I was very rigorous about keeping up with the news and I think I have a good nose for sniffing when trouble is brewing.

Probably a bit of dumb luck in the mix too.

Mr. X, have you read THE BOOK? http://insidethebook.com/
If so, is it something that would be helpful to people interested in starting to build databases? I just stumbled upon the website and was wondering if it had any value.

It's definitely required reading for baseball ( i assume anyway, i know nothing about modeling baseball, but it's a good book regardless). Nothing to do with databases though.

Like durito said, it's an excellent book. It has a lot of information than is applicable to modeling, but it's not a starter book. I'm not saying you shouldn't read it right away, you should. It's interesting and it will really open your eyes to the nearly endless avenues to pursue when it comes to baseball. But, if you're just starting out, it would be hard to apply most of the info.

I've never read it, but I think Baseball Hacks is what you want ASAP. It's my understanding that it goes into great detail how to build a database from retrosheet and even how to scrape play-by-play from the mlb.com xml feeds.
