Saw a few odds and ends from years past this week. Nothing too exciting but wot the hell, might as well kick off a discussion.

Pushing Tin (1999) - this is a rare case where I have a movie rated quite a bit higher than the hordes at imdb. It has a 5.9 rating there but I give it a 7. I like it. I think it is a well-integrated character study against the backdrop of the high pressure world of air traffic control. It is far from flawless but it worked for me. Maybe I just need to accept that I am defenseless against the charms of John Cusack.

The Exorcist (1973) - not my favorite movie genre but I can appreciate it for what it is. 7.3 out of 10.

Outbreak (1995) - star-studded clunker about a virulent outbreak that threatens not only the whole world, but the USA! Chock full of cliches and heavy-handed everything. Naw it is not an all-time stinker but it is pretty bad. You definitely expect more from this cast (Morgan Freeman, Dustin Hoffman, Kevin Spacey, Donald Sutherland). 4.6 out of 10.

The Salton Sea (2002) - this is a really well put-together movie IMO. I recommend it. I can't explain how the same director can create this gem and also Two For The Money but somehow, it be. 7.4 out of 10.

I was not familiar with The Fall but it looks very interesting. Again, oddly, there is a Two For the Money connection (Tony Gilroy wrote both) but that aside, everything looks to be in order. Rated 7.9 at imdb - very high - and the chatter I am seeing there makes me want to check it out.

Someone made a comment about how it hasn't been released. I guess that means it went straight to DVD? Dunno.

I rewatched it for the first time in years several months ago. Still incredibly effective and shocking, even by today's desensitized standards.

Hot Tub Time Machine

The Mrs and I watched it first time last night and was hilarious. John Cucask (usually like his movies) gave it the star credibility. Kept us laughing most of the time. Who's the actor they called the Violator? Unreal!

The director did a good job on camera angles which IMO is key on getting the most out of a movie. When the violator lost the bet and was supposed to blow his black friend the closeup of his mouth was crazy. Me clearly remembering this, is that like a homo tendency? Whatever, 9 out 10 whatever we use these days? That's it, 9 Bananas out of 10 on my scale!

Gangs of New York

I have seen this movie a ton but DanceGirl had never seen it. I enjoy it more and more every time. I Danial Day Lewis is probably turning into my favorite actor. I know I am partially biased because of his role in There Will Be Blood but still he is amazing. The movie is just as good now as it was 8 years ago when it came out. My only criticism is that they could have gotten someone else better to play the part of the tramp (Cameron Diaz's character). Other than that...good stuff. A bit long but doesn't FEEL like 3+ hours.

Abre los ojos (Open Your Eyes)

So I went into watching this movie thinking that it would be head and shoulders better than the remake Vanilla Sky. I was pretty disappointed. I don't think the characters were developed as well in this version as they were in Vanilla Sky. The newer remake also does a much better job of throwing little subtle hints in that you never notice until you watch it 1 or 2 or 10 times again. This movie just kinda moved along but didn't do much for me. I thought I was going to be annoyed by subtitles the whole time and that didn't really phase me...it just didn't deliver. For once I can say that the Remake is much better than the original. Weirdest thing ever to me...Penelope Cruz was the same character in both the original and the remake....never saw that before.

I only saw Gangs of New York once - when it first came out - and had a relatively low opinion of it for a Scorsese flick. It wasn't a thumbs down situation but I was just lukewarm. I can't remember my exact criticisms very clearly (although I do remember not liking Cameron Diaz in it); but maybe I was just having a bad day. It's about time to see it again.

I remember Outbreak. Was soooo bad.

The Fall - Excellent excellent movie.

This movie was excellent. Bread always pulls something out something that wows me, not always a good wow, but this one was.

DO IT. Seriously. It's been given two thumbs up by MrX and yours truly.

I shall do it. Mattie Rain has put me on the path.
