Just saw a few odds and ends from TV in the past week.

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003) - Good solid flick. Say what you want about Russell Crowe, he does pick good movies to be in. I did not like the vagueness in the ending. Perhaps they were planning on a sequel that never materialized. But overall a solid 7 out of 10.

Little Miss Sunshine (2006) - Aggressively quirky indy film. Pretty good. I'm not quite as gaga as the people who made it a Best Picture Oscar nominee and have made it the #230 film of all time at imdb, but I am generally favorable about it. 7 out of 10. Alan Arkin winning the Best Supporting Actor Oscar was a rare upset that keeps me on my toes whenever I'm capping the Oscars and thinking the chalk always wins.

Halloween (1978) - I am not big on the horror genre. I had never seen a Halloween or Friday the 13th or Nightmare on Elm Street etc. etc. But for some reason we got into this on a slow night. I am really amazed to see this is rated 8 out of 10 at imdb. That is very high rating which should put it in the top 250 films of all time. It is not on that list for some reason even though there are some 7.9's on it. I don't know what is going on with that. Anyway, giving it credit for some unintentional laughs, I give it a 4/10.

Blood Simple (1984) - I am a pretty big Coen Brothers fan and this is their first film and I had never seen it. So I was glad to finally see it. It's pretty good but I prefer the way their style has evolved since then. 6 out of 10.

I remember Blood Simple as being pretty good. Been 20 years since I seen it though.

I just did not get the whole Little Miss Sunshine thing at ALL. What am I missing? Even as far as quirky, slice of Americana films go, for me, it failed miserably.

I loved Little Miss Sunshine. Steve Carrell's character as a depressed academic (the 2nd best Proust scholar in America if I recall correctly :biglaugh:) had to be based on someone real. I know several people like that.

To me it was a cross between Funny People (self-acceptance of one's quirky nature) and American Beauty (social pressures and conformity taking their toll on people who shouldn't have tried to conform in the first place)

Breadipoo I think that the target audience for Little Miss Sunshine was urban fuck-up types with fluff college degrees like "Literary Theory" :jerk: and/or people who look like Woodstock survivors even though they were born in 1981.

You're welcome Breadipoo.

I have been on a Breaking Bad binge lately. I'm 2 seasons in and I'm still floored by the whole thing. Brian Cranston aka Malcolm's Dad is just sensational and the writing is very clever, mixing terrible tragedy with lots of comedy, which is needed to keep the show from being an absolute downer. If there is a better show on TV right now, I wanna know what it is.

Halloween is a great film considering the time period/amount of money that went into making it, etc. But I also enjoy the genre (for what it is).

Blood Simple was okay, agree with you there, not my fav my the Coen Bros. but a good film nonetheless.

Little Miss Sunshine I really liked, but only saw it once. The pervy coke-snorting Grandpa saved that movie IMO.

As for Master and Ejaculator, I would give that movie about a 4. I like Crowe, and the story is a great one, I just was never really interested...and you hit it, the ending killed it...

Little Miss Sunshine has some details that don't work for me.

One bit I didn't like was the little girl's dance in the final pageant scene. I don't generally think of myself as a prude but it managed to bring some prude out in me.

I have thought it through and I can't intellectually justify that - in fact I can see it as a very sharp commentary on those kinds of creepy pageants in general - but whatever, I definitely do not enjoy watching that key scene.

But in the big picture, I find the movie has some charm which I enjoyed more on this second viewing.

I hear ya - it initially shocks, then it forces you to realize that these kiddie pageants are no less uncomfortable unless you're one of those freaky Mommys who are eager to relive their glory days as seductresses. Then you're just left feeling uncomfortable.

What would be your favorite Coen brothers movie if you had to name one? I'd go with O Brother, Where Art Thou? which is one of those movies I can watch over and over and never get tired of. Shit turned me into a George Clooney non-hater.

Since I have to pick one I'll say Fargo. But there are about 5 that are bunched up for a close 2nd.

Muddy if you think Halloween only deserves a 4 then you should never watch horror flick.

I would generally agree, although I would point out that Halloween is just one type of horror flick. Something like Don't Look Now, I consider a very good movie. I do not consider The Exorcist as great as many people but I find it a much more interesting sort of horror movie than the line-up-the-teens-and-slaughter-'em horrors.
