I only saw one movie this week

From Here to Eternity (1953) - "Classic" army story set against the backdrop of Pearl Harbor. It has many of the problems I find with old movies. Characters jumping out of character in conspicuous unnatural ways in order to move the plot along. Some very hammy acting. It's good and completely watchable but I am just not on board at all with its rating of 7.9 at imdb. I give it a 6.6.

Instead of watching movies, we got into the mini-series, The Pacific which is about activities in the Pacific theater during WWII. Executive Produced by Spielberg and Tom Hanks yada, yada.

So far we have seen 6 of the 10 episodes. It is not blowing me away at all. It is not rating up there with other Hanks/Spielberg WW2 stuff, Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers. To be honest, I am not totally decided if I even want to watch the last 4 parts. I'll see how Jennay feels about it.

No final rating yet; just throwing it out there for discussion if anyone has any thoughts.

Muddy, i too wasnt overly impressed with the first half of The Pacific...the fighting scenes and all the action are cool, but to me, once you have seen a few scenes, it all kinda seems the same... I have a feeling you will enjoy the 2nd half of the episodes more than the first. the personal stories are focused on more and you learn more about the characters and there is more than just a lot of fighting and shit happening

matty is right though, there are some pretty gory parts that are entertaining too, but i like the stories of the guys

Yeah, what I have found so far is a lot of stuff that is really good and interesting and makes me just shake my head and wonder how I would react in the situation. It makes me say, "Holy shit, look at the shit humans do to each other. Incredible. Horrible." A lot of the time I have no idea what is going on and I don't think I'm supposed to. They are trying to convey the reality of war. It was not always John Wayne with some clear mission and black and white choices. In reality it was a bunch of kids trying to follow unclear orders with no real idea what was going on.

Okay. So that has value and I am definitely not giving the thing a thumbs down. But after ~5 hours of viewing, I'm like, "Okay I get that. Now give me something to sink my teeth into and let me connect with these people."

The last 4 parts are a lot more focused Muddy - they all involve that young kid whose dad didn't want him to go to war in the first place. They stand on their own as excellent mini-movies.

Watched The Sting with Paul Newman and Robert Redford last night. Depression era film about grifters and gambling.

I would watch anything with Paul Newman in. Film was much acclaimed when it came out, gaining multiple Oscar nominations.

I enjoyed the film, I find the whole depression era, mobster scene fascinating.

Interesting how they could pulled scams, that would be impossible in today's world with the internet, and instant results.

Tropa de Elite (Elite Squad)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0861739/

Kato was asking about the violence in Rio de Janeiro the other day, this movie shows a bit of it. Mainly its about this special SWAT-like team called BOPE, who functions more like a military unit than a police one. The story itself is not extraordinary but the settings are very real. Shows the real corruption of the police force, the million rackets they conduct and protection to the militias they provide. As such, the regular police force is useless to combat crime. Enter BOPE, in order for it to become an effective force the government and responsible institutions gives them lots of leeway in how they operate, including becoming judge, jury and executioners. Google "rio de janerio police death squads", its all real, one of the worst human rights abuser in a developed democracy, and this movie depicts it accurately.

The real BOPE

Saw The Social Network the other day. I highly recommend it. Nothing too exciting, but a really engrossing story revolving around subject matter I think you would all be as interested as I was to learn about.

I just started watching the Pacific too. I've seen 2 and a half episodes and I like it. But I'm a sucker for that kind of shit.
