It has been a long time since I did one of these threads so there is potentially a lot to talk about. Most recent stuff:



Hereafter - Hard movie to evaluate. Definitely not my favorite Clint Eastwood directed movie. If you buy into the premise, it was fairly interesting to watch it develop. I was not bored. But then it had this ending that just kinda lays there. It's almost like nothing that happened in the movie even matters towards the ending. I had some problems with some of the special effects too. With a better ending, it could have been a 7 out of 10 but the ending was so conspicuously off target, I knock it down to a 5.4.

Gosford Park (2001) - I enjoyed this movie a lot. One of Robert Altman's best. Could have been an 8 but there was something about the way it was resolved that was too contrived and convenient. Plus there was a Stephen Fry character I really didn't like. I think he was supposed to be comic relief but he seemed more like he was in the wrong movie. It threw off my rhythm. Still though, many memorable moments and a great ensemble cast. 7.4 out of 10


Southland - I gave season 1 of this show a try on DVD. It was okay. I have no specific problems to point to but after 3 episodes, I decided to abandon ship. I don't even want to say it is a thumbs down. I could see myself watching it someday if they started showing reruns during my dinnertime or something. But it didn't grab me to the point where I was going to watch the whole season. It didn't pull me in. Maybe I have just seen enough cop shows in my life. Call it a 5 out of 10.

I have seen every Altman film and agree Gosford Park was quite good. You know the style of movie you get with Altman. This movie is no different in scope and vision. Excellent cinematography IMO.

Limitless

It's about a writer whose life headed in the wrong direction. He's got an advance on a book but has writer's block. His girlfriend just dumped him. And now he runs into an ex-girlfriend's brother who gives him a pill that enables him to use 100% of his brain (rather than the 20% or so that we use normally). The pill, of course, has street ramifications as well as physical ones. The ending is incredibly weak - an almost laugher of a plot flaw. You're just kind of left saying, "Really?" A completely uncreative and lazy ending. I wouldn't watch it again.

i agree on Southland...i can rattle off a handful of better law/cop related shows...I saw a shitload of advertisements for it a few months ago and decided to give this season a try and i did the same thing...quit watching after a few episodes..

heard limitless blew knob, so have been reluctant to bother with it as well

The Killing has been a pretty decent series on AMC so far...its keeping me interested with a few twists

I watched the first 2 episodes of The Killing (which I guess was actually 3 episodes since the first was a double). I was on the fence about it and I didn't catch it yesterday. Sunday has become far and away my busiest TV viewing day and The Killing became the odd man out.

I'm pretty sure that episode will be on again later in the week so I will probably give it one more chance and see if it hooks me.



Sunday is busy for me though.

Borgias cracked me the fuck up this week...jeremy irons is funny as hell when he is trying to get out of a situation..

I kinda liked Hereafter. I was a bit baffled at the overall story as well, but after thinking about it for awhile afterwards, my appreciation for what Clint was trying to do grew.

Just started watching Breaking Bad, which I've heard tons of good things about. I have to say that the opening five minutes of the very first episode were awesome totally awesome. I have high hopes.

Saw Tangled again. A movie that makes you feel like a little girl all over again. I really enjoyed it.

Dunston Checks In - A movie about a rude ape running roughshod in a posh hotel, tormenting Pee Wee Herman and George Costanza along the way. What's not to love? 10 MATTY RAINS!!

Antibodies - Everyone should be sure to view a serial killer movie in German subtitles at least once in their life. I gots mines. You gots yours?

Stir of Echoes - I can never get enough of the Kevin Bacon face. Straight money, that guy.

Sucker Punch - A video game type action flick with a bunch of hot young girls. Amazing soundtrack. I didn't even realize that the lead was Emily Browning. When I first saw her in Lemony Snicket's A Series Of Unfortunate Events seven years ago, I felt kinda creepy for stating that Browning was going to grow up to be ridiculously, ridiculously good looking. But yet, here we are. Added creepy points for admitting that I've seen the pictures that surfaced of Vanessa Hudgens naked on the internet back when she was like 16. And I can't say that sucked either.

Sliding Doors - Starring Gwyneth Paltrow back before her face was in full droop mode. Some guy cheats on her. Another guy hides the fact that he is actually married from her. Doors slide. Shit happens. Whatever.

I think The Hammer starred Adam Carolla as an aging boxer or something but I fell asleep about 20 minutes in. No clue, no regrets.


Millions more since we last had our old movie discussions, but that is good enough for now. Kudos on the thread revival, Muddy.

Breaking Bad's first season is genius. Very very fonny. 9 Matty Rains.

Need to go see Sucker Punch.
