subtitle: The Road to Overpayability.

The level of gab and scuttlebutt is crazy. Or so it seems to me anyway.

So he has talked to Edmonton - and met with Brendan Shanahan form the Maple Leafs. Detroit is still formally considered a candidate.

Now he has jetted off to Prague where the World Championships are taking place. Even if he doesn't actually have a meeting set up ----> smart.

WHAT'S GOING ON?? WHO'S HE TALKING TO??

Hockey coach Rockstar.

It's funny to hear people try to reconcile his supposed requirements with the candidates.

I don't know how much is him saying stuff - and how much is amateur mind-readers - but people keep stressing how he has to go somewhere he can win ASAP.

(I even heard someone talk about his desire to pursue Scotty Bowman in NHL lore. Isn't Bowman about 8 Stanley Cups ahead? Aren't there about 11 coaches in between them to think about first? Okay, I place a lot of value on the Olympic Gold Medal but still.)

Whatever. He has said his wife will have some input regarding the suitability of a location.

Fair enough.

Basically every candidate is wrong. Edmonton? Toronto? Philadelphia? Buffalo? These are places to go and win right away?

Edmonton and Buffalo in particular ----> good places for wifey-poo?

I dunno.

There is the issue of how much control he demands. I think that is mostly coming from the mind-readers, although it is fair to say he wants an upper management team he likes.

Everyone seems to insist that money is an afterthought issue. Why does no one ever come out and say that money is EXTREMELY important when history shows us it is by far the main thing?

Maybe Babcock is the exception? :dunno:

Detroit seems like the best candidate to me so far.

Toronto should be quite the test of principles. Based on what Babcock has said, he absolutely should not be interested in 4, 5 seasons of rebuild.

But fair chance they will offer him the best money/term combo which is supposed to be barely an afterthought.

So let's see if anyone is full of shit.

The one possibly good fit - as far as the talking points go - is St. Louis. That might open up. No idea how much money they might be throwing around.

San Jose?????

Babcock is calling the shots and doing his coaching bretheren a favour by creating a demand and higher salaries for other coaches. MacLellan will also cash in. NHL coaches and their assistants should be paid way more money.

Edmonton would be an excellent fit. That team will be a powerhouse once Darnel Nurse and a couple other dmen arrive. Their D and G are horrendous. Ottawa have a glut of goalies. They should trade Craig Anderson to Edmonton, but other goalies will be on the market in July and at the draft.

I have heard rumors of Phaneuf to Edmonton long ago, but not sure how reliable those rumors are. Edmonton should go after local boy Phaneuf and Reimer in a package deal. Reimer would actually be a great goalie with a decent D and forwards in front of him. Edmonton will be a force in 2 years.

I keep hearing talk of him going to Anaheim. It won't go away.

Yes, I know, the Ducks are at least a co-favorite to win the Stanley Cup. But not-totally-stupid people keep coming back to it. Theory is: no matter what happens, get rid of Boudreau and bring in the Cockinator.

I just made that up. The Cockinator. Noice.

I can certainly see the appeal of the job for Babcock compared to the Leafs and whatnot.
