I would say unless the couple are complete are complete douchebags your best bet is to either offer 10% a month more in rent or maybe some dark glasses, a white cane and a dog and fake being a blind person. Handicaps are good for getting preferential treatment but it depends on the type of handicap.

Wheelchair: Not good, owner will feel he will have to make it more accessible.
Mental Illness: Not good, owner will worry you might destroy the place or mass murder the other tenants.
Deaf: Good, your probably clean and other than deaf pretty normal but still qualify as handicapped.
Blind: Good but not as good from a cleanliness standpoint to the owner but rate higher in terms of handicap severity.
