There is a subset of an older generation that grew up with Margarine and they are in no way trashy, it's just what they used and they continue to use it. Anyone who is < 40 and uses margarine is trashy.

i will use salted butter on occasion to cook something, but for anything that would usually get covered with butter (waffle, pancake, grilled cheese, oven dish etc, i use the spray stuff

i think this puts me somewhere in the middle of not quite classy and not real trashy
