It's not exactly the "new", though. His 2007 was pretty good, his 2008 was excellent, his 2009 was a drop off but still a lot better than average, 2010 was a total wash but he has certainly matured in 2011. He's not going to be the MVP, he isn't even the MVP on his own team (which is actually Pedroia). The AL MVP will be a contest between Bautista and Adrian Gonzalez - I'd currently bet on the latter due to his AVG and RBI total even though he isn't the best player in Boston.

He's the real deal for sure. 1st round pick and the #1 prospect in Boston's system from a few years back (ahead of guys like Pedroia and Buchholz). Was always talked about as a guy who would develop 20+ HR power. Still relatively young in terms of his development since he played 3 years of college ball. Then the lost season last year. This is only his 3rd full season in the bigs. Not a fluke... Guy can do it all.

Polaroid, think you're confusing his 2008 and '09 seasons. '09 was his best (until this year).

His 2009 season was certainly his best offensive season until this year but his defense was horrendous which took the shine off his overall numbers, his defense had him ranked at #52 out of 63 qualified outfielders that year.

True, defense is difficult to quantify.

Fangraphs recently added a metric for baserunning to player data which I think included things like how often a player advanced from 1B to 3B on a single. Ellsbury was ranked #55 out of 62 qualified outfielders in 2009 (for reference, Adam Dunn was #57). Yes, in 2009 when he stole a league high 70 bases.
