I think Matty put it really well: " I think if I could do a science experiment and groundhog-day my whole life over and over again and tally the results, I would end up developing roughly the same interests and going through the same phases, just in a different order?"

I'm beginning to think we are who we are, and everything else is just luck. Most humans have no earthly idea how much of their lives are dictated by luck and random chance. Now, you could argue "you make your own luck by working hard" or whatever, and I'd agree. But again, I think that just means you are just genetically coded to be a hard worker. Or genetically coded to respond to some outside stimulus, ie death of a loved one, health scare, whatever when it comes to making big life changes.

I think we are victims of our surroundings,by the time you are 5 years old ,that is who we are.Your parents basically dictate what you will become ,if they were good with money you probably will be as well.
Alcoholic family?better chance you will have an addictive personality as well.
Abusive parent?Good chance you will be as well
As a kid you subconsciously observe everything, good and bad.

Sure that's possible, but non of that absolves you from responsibility. The ability to act upon your genetic (environmental etc) code IS your free will.
You can't say that is not me, it's my genetic etc code. That code is you

Now if you wanna argue that we underestimate the difference in people. That things come much harder to some, through no fault of their own, I'd tend to agree.

These are just objectively true. Whether or not we have free will, it's good we all agree on and grasp that genetics/circumstances play a massive role in our lives.

It's amazing how many people still deny that, ie get upset when you talk about white privilege or whatever. Is that term overused/weaponized? Sure. Does it mean life is EASY for all middle class whites and HARD for all lower class blacks? Of course not. But to pretend the path and obstacles are the same for all (parenting, race, sex, neighborhood, genetics etc etc) would obviously be wrong.

I just crushed a whole bag of cheetos despite my stated intention to eat well during the weekdays this week... I'm 63% sure I was free to NOT demolish those delicious orange things.
Yes, THIS encapsulates the debate.

Did Bone Bone CHOOSE to crush the cheetos? Or did his genetic makeup/experiences etc dictate that he needed those cheetos for whatever reason (stress, cheap calories, etc) and thus he just ate them, with no real choice in the matter (only after the fact choosing to rationalize or blame himself, as we all retroactively author our own stories)?

Obviously this is semantics. You are your brain. Your brain automatically making the decision vs. "you" coming to the decision is the same thing essentially, it's all brain waves etc.

But the implications are massive. We believe we are the authors of our lives, but maybe we are just readers of a story that's already been written.

I believe something in the back of his mind having his mind on this made him do it.

Plenty of folks don't get doughy despite sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy diets.

My 23andme test revealed that I'm "predisposed to weigh more than average".

I ballooned almost overnight right after high school (grade 11 in QC.) I was a very skinny 18yo and a suddenly fat 20yo. Always ate the same garbage.

But yeah there was some amount of defeatism in my attitude towards health. I looked at my dad (who's been obese all his adult life) and thought that was my destiny. Truth is, I may be disposed to weigh more but it doesnt take that much work to tweak my programming, so to speak.
The same thing happened to me and I couldn’t agree with you more. It takes a certain kind of person to really push themselves consistently. You’ve got to have a tough mindset.
