from what I read and saw in the movie (8 men out) was that Joe was talked into getting in on the fix because "EVERYONE" else was doing..... their owner Comisky didn't pay them shit, and they all felt they deserved money because he wouldn't pay them what they were worth..... they talked joe into going in on the fix..... and the guy was dumb as rocks....

and when the games started the gamblers didn't keep up their end of the bargain...and didn't pay like they said they would..... so Joe said he wanted out, as did some others..

Joe played up to his potential and never saw a dime....

but he was a "party" to the fixing talks and never spoke up and tattled about it...so Mountain Landis banned him for life.....
