I think we are living in different universes RS. I had onthewhat on ignore for a good long time at SBR and the main reason was his lack of candor and tendency to do weak shtick and make noise-for-the-sake-of-noise rather than just be a person.

I believe this is what Blitty was getting at when he posted this.

Here's a few thread titles by you off the top of my head:

I'm going to the SBR bash.

I'm meeting up with Roguescholar.

I'm gonna work for border patrol.

I'm meeting up with Nicky and Fishhead.

I'm out SBR.

Etc.......

I am assuming those are all posts that he made that ended up being BS. I know there were many more from the time before I put him on ignore.

People ask his motivation for lying about this current situation. I ask his motivation for lying about all that stuff.

I'm sure he would love to have blanket trust now but that is not how the world works. To have skepticism about The Boy Who Cried Wolf is not unfair or anti-social; it is intelligent.

When I got clean and sober after years of bad behavior, I would have loved to have everyone trust me completely the first day but it took time and there were no shortcuts and there was no one to blame but myself.

But it worked out. If Herman sticks with it, he'll make it.

+1

You're alright, onion balls.

RogueyS... My two cents:

It is very hard to nail down a dynamic of any particular forum. Most even seem to sway from week to week, depending on who is contributing and what mood they happen to be in. It's a unique creature.

Just speaking personally, I think everyone here could see that I've calmed down about 200% over the last two years. My days of personal attacks and e-fights to the point that it actually made me angry IRL are over. It's just a board.

But I also agree with you on a sense of community. Hell, I've met and enjoyed the company of probably more than half the guys & girls here. That number will surely grow. I'm all about community given that I spend a good part of many days here.

But it's a fine line when you start judging people on their opinions of others.

A handful of us here love Shanty's posts. Everybody knows the deal with them. There is really no need to let it get to you that some of us are entertained by mindless banter.

As for Herman, the kid has truly grown on me. Matured a whole lot over last 6 months online. I believe his story about the dark honey. But if he is lying, once again, I don't really care. It's fun to have some Jerry Springer action. But truthfully, I'm rooting for the kid. Hope he lays the Herman Lumber right!

And lastly, I enjoy your posts. I can always count on being entertained or educated. Even when you go all Jello on us. :kiss2:

That's certainly your prerogative Mudcat. I've had the occasion to get to know Herman as a person over the last two years, and so I choose to evaluate him as a person with more information than somebody who is just reading threads and looking for entertainment. A lot of the substance of Herman comes out in chat, something you haven't had the benefit of participating in.

I think your allegory is ill-suited to the situation at hand. Herman has never "cried wolf" with regards to his personal life, only with the activities of posting relating to his forum persona. I think it is excessively jaded and unfair to attach all the behavior of OnTheWhat to Herman, as he's demonstrated a sincere and resolute desire to leave his persona across the street and join us as nothing more than himself.

I too have been the victim of personal mistrust by my own misdeeds, and it inspires me to extend even more second-chances to the people I meet now. I have nothing to lose and everything to gain by starting each day off with a clean slate and sharing that freely with others.

Now you're not going to believe this, but a few of us here have also gotten to know Shanty a bit better through Facebook. About 3 or 4 here have conversations with him every day. It's a lot of the same shits & giggles you see here, but so much more. Learned quite a bit about his actual life and struggles in Pakistan. When Shanty calls me his friend, he means it. And I consider him a friend. He's not just an online schtick for me anymore.

So tell me, what is the difference between Mudcat's outlook on Herman, and yours on Shanty?

Thanks Bread. I hope you can understand that the only thing I've ever enjoyed about posting has been debate and persuasive argument, and so I'm limiting my involvement here to just those issues which inspire me to my own brand of e-oratory. I'm not judging you for what you like out of forums, I'm just saying it's largely incompatible with what I seek from them myself. I wanted to make a home here and so I kind of forced it, but now I'm content to recognize that it's pointless to rail against the obvious will of the majority.

I'm not denying anyone's right to love Shanty, I'm sure he's just as worthy of love as any other human. But I have deep misgivings against identifying myself with a crowd that is so often at odds with my own priorities. I think that's why Jello left and why I'm feeling moved to create something of a swan song here.

I love all you guys in special ways for special reasons, hopefully that will be remembered even if I'm not as active here.

Understandable. Hope you stay, but if you don't :kiss2:

Gotta do what makes us happy.

drama, drama

personally I dont give a shit if Herman is lying or not
its his life, who cares...

just for the record I believe Hermmy will get him some chow tongue in the near future.

IMO anyone that takes forumville that serious needs to take a step back and reflect on their own life.

So tell me, what is the difference between Mudcat's outlook on Herman, and yours on Shanty?

I'm sure, empirically, the difference is wholly semantic. But on the surface, I would submit that Herman's efforts to reform his behavior here sets him apart from the likes of Shanty. Moreover, Herman hasn't behaved in a way to hurt anyone on the forums, whereas Shanty's stiffing leads me to question his principles, and especially his Christianity. As a Christian myself I have to take umbrage at anyone who behaves in such a way as to paint the lot of us with a bad brush, which also happens to include our current Pope in my estimation.

Finally, Facebook is not Gamelive. If those conversations are private, then I have no way in which to factor them into my evaluations. Herman said everything he did to whoever happened to be listening in S-faggot-R Chat. I give Herman more points than Shanty for not hand-picking his audience to exclude his detractors. If Shanty would face his criticism like a man, I would gladly accord him more respect.

So there's your answer. My impression of Shanty comes from reading what he posts, while Mudcat's impression of Herman consists of a select few threads made at a different forum. If Shanty cleaned up his act in like fashion upon joining GL then he too would get the benefit of the doubt.
