How about movies like The Hustler or Cool Hand Luke?

A Streetcar Named Desire?

There are so many good movies.

I think you may be generalizing. There are so many rehashed turds that Hollywood puts out these days. Also, look at most of the highest grossing movies of our time. The vast majority will be largely forgotten in 20 years. They aren't classics by any means. Spiderman, Transformers, Avatar, etc. will all be laughed at for their primitive CGI and trivial storyline. Just like today, the good movies of that era are typically not the most widely viewed or talked about.

i agree with MF here...

i still think the early comedies are quite better too

-bringing up baby
-man's favorite sport
-what's new pussycat (anything peter sellers)
-dr strangelove
-bedazzled (moore/cook)

sunset blvd may be the best movie ever made

today you have tarantino/coen's/fincher/scorsese/pt anderson/wes anderson who are all good, i just think body of work from '69 past is considerably better

I get the feeling that (cinema) acting used to be heavily influenced by theater, where overacting is pretty much a requirement.
You hit the nail on the head with this one. When you watch an old flick you can't expect the experience to come out of the screen an envelop you. Old movies require you to take responsibility for breaking the fourth wall and inserting yourself into the story as though you were actually there. The over-acting, as Muddy puts it, is as much of a storytelling device as the majestic cinematography and soundscapes that are the hallmarks of today's movies.

There's a lot better cinematography today. But so many movies have nothing interesting to say. The convoluted, pointless, yet predictable plots, the in your face action, explosions, preoccupation with gratuitous violence, rapid changes in camera angles along with a bunch of other shit makes so many films unbearable.
