@mrquincy lent me some of his old cards that have issues, for me to try and restore. I watched a bunch of YouTube videos about vintage card restoration so I'm a bit of an expert.

I have two Mike Bossys and one Gretzky that have the potential to be restored to most of their glory.

I have a case of Kraft hockey mask from the 90s as well as four apple boxes of miscellaneous.My childhood cards either got thrown out or put in my bicycle spokes.

What witchcraft did you use to do that??

Elmers glue and duct tape?

Mix of distilled water and alcohol, then press the card inside a big book with a weight added on top, then after an hour or so take the card out and massage the crease out with a Q Tip. Works surprisingly well.

I took delivery of a Gump Worsley rookie card today, 1953-54 Parkhurst:

A lot of these cards were glued inside albums using weak adhesives.

Removing the extra paper and adhesive is fairly easy using water and alcohol:

What value did you add there taking the card from fair to VG or whatever?

Not sure, the card was ungraded. I'm probably not improving it by more than 2 grades or so.

I bought a Bernard Geoffrion that was graded a 2 because of a crease. I cracked it open and did my thing, will resubmit it to the same company for fun. I think I'll get a 4.

Yeah, a lot of them look grungy. They look kinda prehistoric compared to 53-54 and up. 58-59 and 59-60 are my favorite sets, styling wise. 53-54 is very nice too.

I'm on the hunt for cheap Jacques Plante, hard to come by. Even the creased ones go for (relatively) big money. Habs tax.

What value did you add there taking the card from fair to VG or whatever?

So the guy who sold it to me asked for it back (!) He didn't know I had cleaned it. I showed him pics and he assumed I now wanted about $500 for it (I paid $100 shipped.)

$500 would be cool, but I think it's more likely worth $250-350. It would probably get a 3 or 4 from PSA, or a 5 or 6 from KSA (they're looser with vintage cards).

Still, I did well.

So he agreed to trade for a 55-56 Béliveau that's pretty clean, AND a Rocket Richard that's been trimmed. Holy shit boys. The Béliveau by itself is worth a bit more than the Gump. 🥳
