Grey Cup: Royal York hotel denies entry to horse, relents later in day

Its officially 64 years of hotel invasions and counting for a group of Calgary Stampeders fans.

They were first denied entry Thursday morning, but officials later relented and Marty the horse trotted into the foyer of the Fairmont Royal York Hotel, greeted by cheers and ya-hooos!

I think it was just the right thing to do, said Fletcher Armstrong, co-chairman of the Calgary Grey Cup Committee, who was perched atop Marty for most of the morning.

Some 64 years ago, a group of Stamps fans rode a horse through the lobby of the Royal York ahead of the 36th Grey Cup.

The Stamps beat the Ottawa Rough Riders 12-7 that year.

Martys owner is the son of the man who gave those Calgary fans the horse back in 1948.

The Calgary Grey Cup Committee, born out of the stunt, has been invading hotels with horses ahead of the big game in every Grey Cup city since then.

I don't have any data in front of me but I think that overall, it is a higher scoring game than the NFL. Not by a ton but a bit. More pass oriented.
