Because my wife is severely immunocomprimised I was briefly worried about the hauntovirus with some rodents I was trapping in the basement (moles, voles and mice). But I looked at it a bit more in depth and it turns out that some crazy high percentage of cases, like 99.9%, occur west of the Mississippi. Crazy that it doesn't (cant?) cross that line.

I think it has to do with the rodents found in the wild west that can carry the virus and the dusty desert conditions
So it's not the Mississippi per se, just that the range of the western xyz rodent that carries it stops generally in the desert.

I guess I had always heard it's a virus that is hosted in "mice" but it's really specific mice.

For example, here's the range of common deer mouse:

Obviously it cannot host huantavirus.
