All my life, I've been really, really bad at recognizing people, even people that I've known all of my life. It's been a constant source of anxiety for me. I have a hard enough time in normal situations, but when I run into someone out of their usual context, I'm truly hopeless. I've run into guys that I've played hockey with for years at a store, and they look completely unfamiliar to me.

I was listening to a This American Life earlier this year and I discovered that there is a disorder called prosopagnosia, or face blindness, which affects the brain area responsible for face recognition. Severe cases are caused by brain injuries, but there's growing evidence that a significant portion of the population suffers from a less severe form of the disorder.

Celebrity recognition tests are considered one of the best ways to test for face blindness. I took this one:

and scored 45%. If you guys have some free time, give the test a shot and report back. I want to see how I compare to the Gamelive community.

Hmm. That's weird. You are kinda messed up there.

I found the test so ridiculously easy I thought it was some kind of joke and a punchline was going to pop up at any moment. I knew every one instantly. I guess I am good with faces.

I am not very good with voices. Like with placing who is doing the voices in animated features. I would be interested in some kind of test of that.

But I have noticed how some people are not good with faces. Sometimes on porn forums there will be a thread dedicated to a certain model and guys will add pics of someone that barely resembles the subject and it's like, 'DUDE, what are you thinking?' I wish I had an example to post off the top of my head - I don't - but anyway, sometimes it is really puzzling how far off guys are.

I got 90%. I missed the guy from star trek, and confused Condelizza rice with mrs. Obama.

Muddy, you watch too much tv or movies. Some of the actors I recognized instantly but had hard time remembering name. Had to look up ben stiller.

In my case, it is more about being born (cursed) with a ridiculous memory. I can recall exact bits of conversations I had 30 years ago. I can recall part numbers from the job I had 20 years ago. For better or worse, this kinda stuff fits in with that. I have a ridiculous amount of mental real estate being bunged up with pop culture trivia I will never need.

Anyway, I hope you understood MrX that I was only intending a friendly jab when I said you were kinda messed up. I would trade you any day, my mental database of this nonsense for your knowledge of computer stuff.

100% don't worry baby, I'll help you through life.

I think this actually proves that you're a genius scientist and I'm ummmm....not. All those brianiac, genius guys had quirks like this.

Mr. X also has a very hard time finding things that are right in front of him. Although, this might be a general man problem. Most of the time, I find it endearing. Except when he's looking for clothes and digging through the dresser like a dog furiously digging a hole, with clothes flying out behind him until he finds the right thing <-----slight exaggeration for comedic effect.

My favorite was when he was looking for tomato soup. He called me into the pantry to help find it. He was looking straight at it. I didn't say anything, locked my eyes on it and just stood there. When he figured it out, his response...."It was just so dinky. How am I supposed to see that?"

I LOVE THAT GUY! HE'S AWESOME.

Go cubs.

I actually have a very good memory for words and dialogue. Apparently, it's a completely different part of the brain for face recognition.

Yeah I was thinking that after I typed it. Who knows how these things are connected together? It is fascinating.

I would be really curious to find something like this having to do with recognizing voices. I suspect I am quite bad but I wonder how bad.

Okay, now that enough results are in and I'm not worried about influencing results by dropping names from the test...

I answered Elvis at least 3 times, maybe 4 times. Of course one of them was Elvis, so I consider that successful answer a little suspect. I thought Tom Cruise was Elvis. I can't remember the others.

I also think I went with Oprah several times, one of which was correct.
