I was a very sensitive, imaginative kid and it was a big thing for me. If I threw something in the garbage - particularly if it was a good toy that broke or something I had gotten a lot of use out of - I could feel downright guilty. It could bother me for quite awhile.
I have grown out of that for the most part. I basically had to because that kind of thing will make you crazy. I have willed myself to become, if anything, one of the least likely guys to form sentimental attachment to inanimate objects.
But last night I had a peculiar experience. I buy these big boxes of freezie pops. There are 5 flavors and I don't like the grape very much. So I grabbed a handful of freezie pops to stick in the freezer and I separated the grape ones and tossed them in the garbage.
I felt bad. I thought about that and realized it wasn't the money - they are worth less than 20 cents each. I felt bad because they look so nice and they weren't going to be able to fulfill their destiny. Poor grape freezie pops.
I still have a lot of little kid in me.
