What would cause my computer to suddenly go to a black screen and say "no operating system can be found" and just basically go to shit?

I had initially thought my son had spilled something on it again but he didn't.

It's almost 99.99% hard drive related - after googling I found this is the same issue but on XP rather than W7 although I'm sure that a potential problem/solution would be common across both versions of the software (make sure everything is unplugged from the back of the PC before you do this and make sure you're grounded to avoid any nasty static damages).

Today I turned on my computer & got the Emachine logo and shortly thereafter, the message that "no operating system found". Was convinced my hard drive failed. Checked Google for help. Found your suggestion to unplug and then replug the wide cable ribbon, motherboard to hard drive. Restarted computer and damm near fell out of my chair when the computer went right to win XP. I was minutes away from trashing the computer. Thank you very much.

Hi Oksana... I'm sorry I cant help but I did a quick google search of "no operating system found" and found tons of information. Here are some links.

Also, do you have a boot disk that came with your computer?

Thanks! I was looking for help on my phone all day and was getting frustrated with the random crap I was finding so I gave up. Unfortunately no disk anymore - that definitely was murdered by my son.

I've had hard drives crash after having them for a day. Not much you can do if that's the case.

Try this:

I'd take it back to the store if possible, let them open it up and do the work instead of you.

Excellent! Thanks so much guys. I was worried that I'd somehow screwed it up or had picked up a virus somehow. I already went out and bought another PC laptop today because it's just easier to do SBR stuff when I'm working than on a Mac. But if I can get the old one fixed, at least I'll be able to get my files and other stuff off of there and then just give it to my son in a few months.

When you get to the part where you run diskpart.exe, you should see your hard drive partitions (NTFS) listed there. If they're there, just continue on with those instructions. If they aren't there, you should check your BIOS to make sure that the computer is finding the hard drive. (You could do that first as well.)

If the BIOS is finding the hard drive but the partitions aren't there, you'll have to try reinstalling Windows.

If you do take it back to the store and they say the hard drive is the problem, they will probably either reformat it or give you a new hard drive so in both cases you lose everything you have on the old one. If the files are really important get them to stick a new one in and buy the existing one from them (at a good a discount as you can get) so you can recover the files yourself. I've had a few HD failures and have never been unable to recover the files I wanted.

The problem is I have no clue what to do once I have the hard drive. I still have one from a fried Macbook last year and it's just collecting dust. But I will figure it out now. Sick of constantly losing stuff.

Next question: Do any of you guys use Chrome? I've always been a Safari and Firefox user but Firefox kept hanging on my last PC so I figured I'd give Chrome a try. But now I can't see pics posted in threads on here. They all come up with that broken file symbol, other than avatar pics. For all I know I need to adjust a setting on my PC as I'm really not literate with PC stuff but since I can see them elsewhere, I'm thinking it might be a Chrome issue.

I use Chrome here, only image issue is the little images that are supposed to show up next to each forum on the main forum page (http://gamelive.com/forum/forum.php) They don't show up at all in Chrome - they do in IE and Firefox. :clueless:

Here's what I see on the main page. That first icon is what I'm seeing everywhere in threads here.
