So, I broke a tooth and need a crown for an upper back tooth. Despite paying $610 for health insurance, I have no dental plan (which reminds me I need to look at that exchange stuff you guys were talking about.)

Seems like even when I had dental insurance I paid some crazy amount for a crown.

I guess my question is do I break down and spend the money? ...I'm guessing $1200-1500. Can I find some independent dental plan on line and wait it out til coverage is effective? Not sure if there are any good dental plans even out there that are not group policies.

It doesn't bother me most of the time, but I know it's not going to get better and right now is causing some pain. I've always had good teeth, albeit quite a few fillings, but maybe this doesn't bother me since it's in the back and not visible. Hell, maybe I should just have it pulled although I am not sure I would like that.

My nephew is top of his class in dental school, but doesn't graduate for another two years. If anyone knows of a good dental plan I can sign up for online that doesn't have some sort of waiting period please let me know.

I'm the type of person that would wait, but I have heard that if you don't get the tooth taken care of, it could cause an abscess. That's additional money and a whole lot more pain. I don't know much about dental plans, so I'm not much help there. Hopefully, someone can point you in the right direction!

Thanks Teela. I'm with you on the waiting...I guess I have failed to mention that I have been waiting already for quite a while... You are right on the abscess. That does not sound fun at all. I guess the other thing is it seems every time you go to the dentist they are always trying to get you to do something unnecessary...at least that has been my experience. Maybe I'm afraid they will find something else and I just don't want to hear it. I hate going to the dentist.

I doubt that any dental insurance would be worthwhile. Do you need a root canal?

I just had some fillings done. Kind of wish I never went.
I don't think I need a root canal. Well actually I'm not sure, how would I know? Is that just necessary if it is infected or something? It's probably been broken for 6 months and I've been putting it off but I think some more of the filling might have come out as the space up there feels bigger when my tongue gravitates toward it. Some days I don't notice it at all but when I do it's mildly bad pain.

I'm sure you are right on the dental insurance. I think most of those are just discount type programs.

yeah, and its not just the money, they maybe ruining the teeth. The guy did a couple of filling which I'm not sure were necessary. And now I have occasional weird pain/sensation. Thank god I quit going before he got a hold of my other teeth.

Awesome! I don't know if you were being serious or not, but I would consider that although the thought of it scares me a bit. I think the scare tactics in the first part of that second article however, may scare me more:

"Studies at the University of Minnesota and other research centers have shown that taking care of your teeth may just save your life. How? The bacteria in dental plaque and unhealthy gums can cause platelets (tiny clot-triggering cells) in the blood to clump. Clumping leads to clotting, and if a clot ends up in the heart or brain, the result is a heart attack or stroke."

I'm going to Cabo in February. I wonder if I can hold off that long. Not sure I want to spend my too few and far between vacation days getting dental treatment, but I bet they give you good drugs in Mexico.

I'm definitely going to check this out.
I have seen people doing that for high end operations and such. I wonder how much I would save on one crown? I could probably use two if the price was right.

We get our dental work done in Colombia. It's just fine and way cheaper.

go be a guinea pig at a dental school.
There isn't one around here. I looked. I'm lucky my siblings are so much older than me, so I can get the benefit of my nephew's services when I'm ready for implants or dentures or whatever people get when they get old. Maybe I could be his guinea pig but he's only 1 year in. Not sure he would do it even if I was willing. Maybe I could just get it pulled and wait two years til he graduates and do an implant if it bugs me.

IAG, I was being serious. For the price of dental work in North America you could take a vacation and have your dental work completed in Mexico or Colombia.

Rito, can you provide some examples of prices for dental work you had done in Colombia and what it would have cost in the US?

I need some work done on a couple of my bottom teeth on my left side. I've been reading online and heard from alot of people that had root canals and crowns done complained that the repaired teeth cracked/broke not long after the procedure. Many of the same people said in future they wouldn't spend thousands of dollars on those procedures and instead would just have their teeth extracted and get implants.

Because of my situation with my mom (currently full time caregiver -she has Alzheimers) I don't have much time off but like I said, I'm going to Cabo in Feb. I assume I could find someone there? ...only issue is holding out that long. I guess I could go to the dentist for evaluation and if it's not time sensitive (although I'm sure they will tell me it is) try to wait it out til Feb.

hahaaha swear to God, as I am typing this, there is a news story on on ABC about going to Costa Rica for medical tourism! They showed a guy getting a knee replacement and the cost was half.
