A formal press conference to announce his hiring could happen as early as Monday in Tim Leiwekes latest eye-popping maneuver.

Shanahan immediately becomes the face of the franchise, a symbol of hope for Leaf Nation that mediocrity will soon turn into a much higher level of competitiveness.

He scored 656 career goals. He won those Cups. Hes itching to help his hometown team win and isnt afraid of the daunting challenge.

If he brings a little luck of the Irish with him, he might even pull it off.

Personal life

The son of Irish parents, Rosaleen and Donal, he also excelled in lacrosse. He grew up in Mimico, a neighbourhood of Etobicoke (now Toronto), Ontario, where he attended St. Leo's Catholic School. The family attended St. Leo's Roman Catholic Church (in Mimico). Shanahan briefly attended catholic central high school in London, Ontario, where he graduated. He has three brothers, Danny, Brian and Shaun. He also attended Michael Power/St. Joseph High School, where he played on the hockey team and won an OFSAA gold medal in 1985.

They are obviously hoping, as they did with Ken Dryden years ago, that because he was with a winning organization once upon a time he can sprinkle some magic dust on the Leafs. Or at least maybe some fans will believe that and be temporarily distracted and mollified.

Seems ridiculous to me. What you need is a GM and a coach. That's what it's about. What does a president do? Okay maybe he replaces the GM every 5 years or so - but what does he do in between? Tell the scouts to watch stuff harder?

Additional layers of management - hooray!

why don't they start by finding a nice skilled European player. Like Sundin was perhaps. Too many damn stiffs on that team.

Why should they? They sell out every game and have a big tv deal. They are the Cubs of the NHL. Just keep rolling out Johnny Bower 2x a year and the Toronto fans are content.

One thing I don't understand is why don't the superstars want to play for them? I can't remember any star in their prime going there.

The current team is 1/2 of 2 re-builds. The Leafs have made an attempt to groom talent in the minor leagues and to some extent it has worked.

I believe the press is to blame for the lack of success on the Leafs. They put way too much pressure on the players. If you asked all the NHL players what is the #1 reason you would not go to Toronto I bet they would say the press and the pressure.

..funny too because MLSE is owned by the two biggest media companies in Canada. Bell Telephone and Rogers Communication

You will notice that all the LEAF STARS are rejects from some other squad..yes im talking about u Phanoeuf/Kessell

What the fuck can Shannahan do that Ron Wilson, Bryan Burke and Carlyle can't do? Nothing... Leafs choke again next season; it's what they do.

Agree with Quincy.

Toronto is a tough place to be a pro hockey player, the coverage is insane. Many players that have left for non hockey markets say they enjoy anonymity/privacy that was not afforded them in Toronto.

When a player first comes to Toronto they are impressed/awed with the coverage and the fan support, that can often backfire later.

Rick Nash didn't want to come home and play for his childhood team because of the pressure.
