Baseball thread for the year

I am going to keep my baseball picks in this thread. I am glad NBA and NHL are both winding down for the season as I am excited to concentrate on fewer sports.

I am really busy with work and been on the road alot so I don't have much time today for write ups, hopefully it slows down over the next month.

I had an atrocious french open and barely broke even in the ncaa tourney and nba and nhl playoffs, not worth the time I spent on it. Going to be conservative the rest of the baseball year until football starts. All plays 1 unit unless listed otherwise

Ran the table in soccer today ,great day so far.

St Louis blues-130 risk 1.30

St Louis is a team I expect to make the playoffs this year despite their poor start. LA is a very average team and has been around the world the past 4 games, good number and good time for the blues to turn this season around.

Carolina/Boston under 1.5 first period -130 risk 2.6

I saw the last game between bruins and hurricanes, same injuries for Boston tonight and I expect Boston to struggle again until they are at full strength.

Edmonton +160 risk 1

I dont care if this loses, I love this Edmonton team and I love this number. They are young and playing every game with a sense if urgency, they looked great against a very tough predators team. the exact opposite of Calgary. Its never easy to win in Calgary, but I will take a number like this every time.

Vancouver -.5 (reg time) -114 risk 1.14

Ryan Kesler is back, and Canucks have a string of home games coming up. You need to beat a team like the rangers at home. That division promises to be tough this year with Edmonton looking great and Colorado playing much better than expected and an always tough Minnesota. The Rangers have never had muck luck in Vancouver.

Minnesota Wild -130 risk 1.30

Pitt has too many injuries and playing back to back in the toughest arena and environment to play hockey in within the united states. I love the Wild at home, such a fantastic home crowd in Minneapolis , I wish we had sellouts like that in the southeast.

It seems strange that the Cardinals are even in the playoffs much less playing for the world series. After Adam Wainwright got hurt in the preseason and just a month away from the playoffs, they seemed to be running out of gas but they came into the playoffs one of the hottest teams in baseball.

In the playoffs, they seem to be firing on all cylinders, Pujols in the playoffs is his usual dominant self and with guys like David Freese hitting everything that comes his way, Holliday stepping up , this is beginning to remind me of the Rockies run into the playoffs in 2007. I believe the Rangers are the better team here and will win this but I like the cardinals in this first matchup.

Pitching hasnt been the bright spot for either team but Chris Carpenter did have a stellar showing int playoffs against the Phillies throwing a 3-hit shutout to win the NLDS vs. Philadelphia. He didnt look that great against the Brewers in Game 3 of the National League championship series, allowing three runs in five innings but St Louis did come out with the win.

Wilson has looked pretty bad int he playoffs, with a 1.85 WHIP and 8.04 ERA in three playoff starts. His last start in Game 5 of the against Detroit, when a Miguel Cabrera grounder took a bounce off the third base bag to open the doors for a 4-run Tigers sixth inning. The Cardinals lineup are also showing some great numbers against lefties.

I have seen some people saying the cardinals have a major advantage without the dh for the first game but I dont see the mitch moreland being that major of a loss hitting wise for the rangers. St. Louis has now won 12 of its last 16 games at home, cool temperatures versus the texas heat, and a vet like carpenter on the mound and the numbers the cardinals are showing with Freese and Pujols and their numbers against lefites, I am taking St. Louis in this first one.

Interesting stat I saw this morning "in the past 5 years of the world series the RL is 19-6 for the winning team including 11-0 the past 2 years. Another unit on St louis -1 +125 risk 1

Toronto started like this last year before fading, they look great with Kessel lighting it up. I saw that first home game for the Jets against Montreal, and I think it going to be a long season for this team

I pushed on my run line but won on the money line in baseball. These two hockey games are the only ones that stand out to me tonight.

I love this total in the baseball game. I will put out a writeup and some numbers tomorrow.

Flyers -125 risk 1.25

Lightning -150 risk 1.50

Rangers/ Cardinals Over 7.5 -135 risk 2.70 (5dimes)

I kept expecting the Rangers to break it open last night and they never seemed to break through. I have a small Rangers future but with the idiotic all star game advantage of home field for the Cardinals, the Rangers need to win this one. I read a stat this morning, the last 10 teams to win game 1 of the world series went on to win the title.

I really thought the Rangers were going to break out last night in the seventh and I am still confused with Ron Washington putting in Esteban Germn to pinch hit with runners on first and third and two out in the seventh. Every stat I look at in my spreadsheets tells me to take Texas tonight, but I just dont put alot of faith in these numbers when you are talking about the pressure of pitching in the world series.

The only way I see Texas losing this series is pitching and tonight they send Colby Lewis to the mound, Lewis looked great last year ont eh playoffs going 3-0 with a 1.71 ERA in 2010 and while hasnt looked as sharp in this years playoffs, he is still 4-1 in postseason play. He doesnt give up a ton of walk and he has been much better against right handed hitters than lefties, but he does tend to get the ball up at times and does get alot of flyballs which could be dangerous with this cardinals bunch. The weather does look windy but this could be a major problem for him tonight if he cant keep the ball down.

I see a ton of people on texas on the boards and alot of people mention they think Garcia could get into trouble. Barring a 3 run shot or some major breakdown , my reaction to is so what if Garcia gets in trouble. If he does get in trouble Larussa will yank him and he will be off as fast a brides nightie on wedding night, capping these starting pitchers is almost pointless in these series compared to capping the regular season.

I like Garcias numbers and he does tend to keep the ball down and get alot more ground balls than Lewis. His numbers at home have been phenomenal, He has a 2.41 career ERA at Busch, and overall this year was 9-4 with a 2.55 ERA at home, and had a 1.11 WHIP. He has good cutter, a great change up and I think he is going to give the Rangers alot of problems. If he does succumb to world series pressure, he won't be in there long, Texas is one of the best teams in baseball against lefties.

Texas hasnt lost back to games since august, and this lineup is just too powerful to keep down long. I like the over in this one , I just wish the weather were better with the wind and the cold and we do have a umpire with strong under numbers,Greg Gibson is behind the catcher tonight and the under was 21-9 this season with Gibson behind the plate. This is giving us a great number on the over and I just dont see these two teams not hitting 8 in this, the Rangers dominate lefties.

Rogie. I just noticed your avatar of Mendes, I just finished reading some stories on that arrest. Polegar had some beautiful mansion in Mangueira with a mural of "justin beiber one time " on there. Bizarre.
