Reports: NHL to realign for 2012-13

With Western Conference teams Detroit, Nashville and Columbus hoping to be relocated to the East, the NHL has opted to realign the entire league rather than shifting Winnipeg, according to the Sporting News.

The purveying plan seeks to divide the league into four divisions -- two with eight teams and two with seven teams. The plan will likely be finalized at December's Board of Governors meeting.

For scheduling, things would be a little off-balance too. You could have every team play one home game and one road game every season against each team in the other Conference:

For the West teams, that would be (2x16) 32 games against the East, leaving 50 games to be played against the rest of the West. 4 games against the other teams in your Division would be (4x6) 24, leaving 26 against the other Division in your Conference. You could hit that by playing 4 games against 5 teams (20) and 3 against 2 (6). So, each year, you'd have one team that only visits you once, and one team that you only visit once. That would be pretty easy to rotate through.

The East would sort of be the opposite. They'd play (2x14) 28 games against the West, leaving 54 games against the rest of the East. 4 games against the other teams in your Division would be (4x7) 28, leaving 26 against the other Division in your Conference. You could hit that by playing 4 games against 2 teams (8) and 3 against 6 (18). So, you'd have 3 teams that visit you once and 5 that visit you twice; and 3 teams that you visit once and 5 that you visit twice.

Use your brains spud. An all Canada division wouldn't work due to the timezone differences. Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa are in eastern zone, Winnipeg in Central time, Edmonton & Calgary in Mountain timezone and Vancouver in Pacific.

I don't even know where Winnipeg is. Do they even have electricity there? Do they live in igloos? Atlanta is a modern city at least something Winnipeg will never be.

Excellent move by the NHL to have Detroit and Florida in a division based on time zones even though they are 1150 miles apart. Detroit to Chicago is 250. Makes sense to me.
