what would you have been doing during the riots?

watching, observing, video-ing???

locking your doors staying at home???

drinking, drugging, breaking????

Looting, fighting?

if you were a downtown vancouver business owner. would you get a few guns and go protect your property?

would you sit at home and look over your insurance policy?

would you be thankful for police, or would you want "good samaritans" to defend your store.

the social psychology of the riot phenomenon is pretty interesting.

I mean I can sit here and shake my head at it, but in the midst of it. I might have joined in.

I would draw the line at hurting people.

Sheeps riot over a game.

Not really. Sheeps riot cause they're anonymous parts of the herd. And I guess they have some amount of pent up angst.

Ken Dryden said it best.

Canucks’ fans didn’t smash windows and turn over cars because they loved their team and were mad about having their moment ruined. They did it for the same reason fans in arenas yell at players words they’d never even whisper to anyone else; why bloggers scream at the world; why David Letterman drops TVs and watermelons from the top of a building to smash on the street below. Because they can. This was not Watts or Brixton or Cairo. They did it because, while others in other places experience real injustice and destruction, for us the sound of breaking glass and heat of blazing cars is interesting, forbidden fun. And we can hide – from ourselves and others – in the moment and amid the thousands around us from any consequences.

What an incredibly artful way of justifying a bunch of mindless goons destroying the beautiful city that they (are fortunate to) live in.

yes it is!

No, it's not. He's putting himself in the shoes of a rioter. That sentence was a calm strike on the pathetic non-reason behind the rioting and a cynical view of the taken-for-granted freedoms that go hand in hand with our uneventful Western lives.

I'm starting to side with plommer. I don't want you anywhere close to me when you're on duty.

all due respect to the lawyer/senator its not a very good rationale

why did my client murder and rape this women and her children?

because he can. and he's never murdered or raped children before. its forbidden and interesting....and with at least one of the children....FUN

he thought he wouldn't get caught....

he did he because HE COULD
