A friend of mine wants to crash here for a week and a half.

I don't want him to. Not that he's a bad guy or anything, he's a friend obviously. But I'm having enough trouble coexisting with my brother. I also don't have another room and he doesn't have a car or anything, so he'd basically be here 24/7 (in the living room the whole time?) and will likely be expecting me to be entertaining him while he's here. Plus, I'm OCD, and I kind of have a thing about people sleeping on my couch. It's leather and expensive (I'm still paying it off) and doesn't need any help getting worn down.

So does this make me a lousy friend/person if I say no?

Nope. A man should never be inconvenienced in his own home, unless it's for a really really close friend or relative in certain instances.

But for a casual friend? If you don't want him there then there you have it.

Your a great guy VDave but everything you just said sounds like it would be best to tell him he can't stay. He should know of the tough times you have had yourself so if he can't accept that then don't feel bad about it.

Two things:

1. There is no way it will only be 10 days. Because you are a nice guy, you will agree when he asks to stay longer.

2. If you let this guy stay with you, I guarantee that you will not be friends after he is gone.

There are friends and there are friends.

I have a very small number of very good friends - less than a handful - that I would absolutely never say no to in a situation like that.

But if it was a more casual friendship, there is just no way.

I moved across country once with my a buddy from college. HE had a friend from high school drive with him, and this HS friend of his was going to stay at our new place for a couple days and then travel around for a bit. This kid ended up staying for 46 days. Never paid a bill. Sleep on my couch, took showers, wasted electricity, and the one day I asked him to pick something up, he was bitchy. I ended up kicking him out, and but the whole experierce changed the friendship between my buddy and his high school froend for the worse.

I also had a friend live with me for 3 months once. He broke up with his girlfriend and lost his job all at once. He was close friend so I didn't mind. I also know in the future if I needed anything he would be the 1st in line to help me.

Yeah, there are two of my friends that I'm very close to, consider them brothers. This wouldn't even be a debate. This guy is a solid guy, I'm happy to have him as a friend, but not up in that tier.

I once got a buddy a job. He was a life long friend. He was just horrible horrible horrible at work and I was embarrassed. When he was fired, he dumped a soda all over the boss' car.

Never ever again.

This thread is making me think about all the shit my friends have pulled over the years. I need some new friends.
