I tear up every time I watch it @MrMonkey. I dunno why so few entered. Probably because he was a favorite to win the triple crown. Stakes races today require a nomination fee and i think they did back then too. Its not so much the cost but the prospect of making money in a race with a better shot to win?

From a bettor standpoint that race was trash.

From a spectator standpoint, it was iconic.

Imagine if more horses HAD entered and something kooky happened?

I think deep down, that race was run for one reason. To watch Secretariat solidify his status as the best of all time
