The proposal is if a team scores a touchdown - and they go for 2-point convert - and make it - they then get a free field goal type kick from midfield. If the dude can kick it through the uprights from 50 ---> bonus point.

9 points altogether.

17 and 18 point leads become a 2 score game.
 
I have many thoughts. My first is, it will not pass. Nothing to do with merit - just general resistance to change.

It will definitely not pass. I will bet 10 billion dollars.



Okay so let's suppose it did just for the sake of discussion. I have to think it would mean the end of the 1-point convert. Not that that's a terrible loss but you would have to be pretty stupid to go for 1.

Except maybe very late in the game to give yourself a 10 point lead.

I know coaches can be ridiculously stuffy and conservative but the 2-point convert is already close to equal long term value to the single. It's a hair under 50% conversion rate. I find it ridiculous that more teams don't work on their 2-point convert game, get their percentage up over 50, and basically default to that except in specific late game situations.

But as I say, stuffy, conservative.

BUT then throw another 40% shot (or whatever) for another point ---> definitely tips the math way in favor of going for the points and away from the single.

In rugby it's a 2 pt conversion. 5 for the try(the td). And the kick is spotted perpendicular to where the ball was touched down. It's not a try until the ball is literally touched down in the try area. That makes the team work harder to score through the middle as oppose easier on the sides, and value more the extra point kick. Those extra points are not so automatic.
 
I think the goal is that more games will remain close and within reach at the end. More exciting finishes.

There is a basic simple logic to that. But it doesn't consider the fact that margins should also increase. A team that built up a large lead in the old system should build up a larger lead with the revised scoring.

There could be more close finishes. But it could be the same - or it could be less.

My guess: about the same.
