Pi is the ratio of the circumference of a circle divided by its diameter.

Exactly. That's why Earth is constantly brodcasting the number pi into space in the search for intelligent extraterrestrial life.

Theory being that if someone is smart enough to receive our message - and hopefully respond to it - it is pretty much impossible that that civilization will not have discovered that ratio during their development.


So the message is basically saying, "Hey, we have a level of intelligence here and obviously you do too. How bout that?! Let's hook up!"
