IRVINE Eviction notices have been posted on a chiropractic/massage business suspected of engaging in illegal activities.
The notices went up a day after The Orange County Register reported on complaints by an adjacent business, Squeegee Pro, that male clients may have been visiting the massage parlor to pay for sex acts.
The eviction notices, dated Monday, are taped to the front and back doors of the unnamed business at 18218 E. McDermott, Suite G, in the Main and Red hill Business Center near John Wayne Airport.
Squeegee Pro had complained about the business to Irvine police and Davis Partners LLS, which manages the business park for owner Prudential Real Estate Investors.
Numerous Web sites identify the massage parlor as a place for clients to pay for sex.
Irvine police were investigating the business for possible criminal activity after it was cited for plumbing and electrical code violations last week.
In the posted notices addressed to Soon Keum Kim, the apparent owner of the massage parlor, landlord PRISA Acquisition LLC, a unit of Prudential Real Estate Investors, gave the business three days to vacate the premises.
The notice said the reason for the eviction was for "one or more unlawful purposes" described in documents from the city of Irvine that were not immediately available for review.
Elizabeth Meehan and Paul Slaney, both 27 and former attorneys, bought the longstanding window cleaning business and took over operations on April 1.
"What surprised us most is how powerless everyone around this business felt. After the eviction notice was posted on the door, I told one of our subtenants and he was very happy to hear they were being evicted. He described how he had heard sounds of sex coming through the wall but had felt powerless to do anything. I believe this whole experience shows that an average citizen can make a difference in their community," said Paul Slaney
Two days later, after seeing a constant stream of male visitors to the business next door, Meehan and Slaney went online and did some research. They notified police after they became convinced that the business next door was involved in prostitution.
Meehan and Slaney told their landlord they wanted to terminate their lease or at least renegotiate it to get their $2,349 monthly rent cut in half, or to go month to month. Squeegee Pro was told, however, that the lease could not be changed until it expired in May 2011.
Late Tuesday morning, no one appeared to be inside the massage parlor. A Korean newspaper sat outside the darkened front door, unopened.
A spokesman for the Irvine Police department was not immediately available for comment.
