Tomorrow is supposed to be 60 here in NYC and that has me thinking of one thing. Gambling. All winter long I have awaited this day where warm weather coincides perfectly with my work and weekend schedule so that I can fill up my playmate cooler with Bud tall boys, strap a pair if binoculars to my belt, and hop an A train to Aqueduct. This place is outside, byob, accessible via public transportation (so you can get smashed) AND you can gambol on world class race horses all day.

Trying to get my contemporaries to go here is damn near impossible and it makes me sick. My GF relents and attends Belmont with me in the Spring and Fall, and even delights at the prospect of attending the summer meet at Saratoga. But my male friends and acquaintances have zero, or even negative interest in taking part in a marvelous celebration of spring. What is most odd is that these guys gamble. Super Bowl squares, NCAA brackets, occasional NFL or mlb game. I don't know what it is, and maybe it is something wrong with ME. If that's the case give me 1-2 in the daily double and lets hit the guaranteed late pick 4 hard keying Pletcher's horse in the G3 Stakes.

Boner, I had a coffee and looking over the thread more deeply, I agree! All this technology crap has nobody going out and smelling the flowers! I don't see kids playing pickup basketball games outside or getting a bases game going on during the summer months!

I saw an article recently showing that the NCAA basketball attendance with regards mostly to the students over the years has been dropping slightly even though the game is more popular than it has ever been! Administrators theorize with all the free streaming going on that the students would rather stay in their dorm rooms than walk cross campus and take in a game relatively cheap!

Or people finally woke up to those meaningless games this week in the bigger conferences. Would you pay $30 and up to see Ole Miss make an epic NCAA run today? Me either.

There is a very real negative connotation associated with the race track and horse racing in general. I fear for the sport once the old guys die off. Our generation for the most part under appreciates the races. I try not to tell people I meet anymore that I like horse racing. I started a new job on Monday and the lunch crew of 20somethings were asking me what my interests are. I had to stop myself from say horse racing.

"Oh, you like to gamble on little men who sit atop horses and whip them? For fun?"
