His wife left him (they have a 14 year old daughter) and he hasn't had a job in 8 months.

I still don't understand why anyone would want to talk someone out of committing suicide.

I talked a suicidal guy down from a highway overpass yesterday but there's no way in hell I could do assembly line work.

Those really are opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of how interesting is my job?

I think it would be very interesting to have ledge-talking as part of your job. Not that I'm happy that people end up feeling that way but it is interesting.

I have even done a bit of that when I used to answer the phones at the Toronto AA Help lines in the 90's. I would get some torn up people sometimes. Again, the fact that there is so much sadness out there is not something I am glad about - but I can't say I was bored to tears when I was involved in those kinds of discussion.
