To start with, a group of musicians and singers calls the Zaouli dancer by the music being played. The dancer, wearing the mask covered by a piece of cloth, gets to the dancing area after an acolyte who unveils the mask to display the beauty of the mask to the audience. Further to this, the dancer performs very short, quick and rhythmical steps according to the songs and such wind and percussion instruments as flutes and tom-toms, including claclay (a Gouro word for a musical instrument made of a piece of a hollow tree trunk with about two slots to allow sounds). The dancers hands and feet follow a well-known choreography resulting from the dancers improvisation made according to the music.

Zaouli de Manfla

Zaouli is a popular mask dance created by Gouros in the fifties. Legends at the origin of the Zaouli mask and dance are diverse, but all say that they were inspired by a very beautiful girl named Djela Lou Zaouli, daugther of Zaouli.

I wonder how long it would take that group of people and their descendants to develop and create the technology to fly an airplane, or make a photocopied image, or to make a cellular phone call from africa to south america?
