I just heard that people are complaining about the key play of the Ghana/Uruguay game.

To recap: with virtually no time left, the Uruguayan guy made a game-saving stop at the goal line with his hand, which resulted in a free kick for Ghana, which the dude missed, which allowed Uruguay to win the game in penalties.

Okay. Good play Uruguayan dude. I'd call it a great play but it is really the no-brainer play of all time. If you don't do the hand ball, your team has no chance, if you do it, you have a chance. Of course you handle the ball.

Now I hear people are seriously complaining about how he cheated and there is some disgrace in what he did? Admittedly I am not an insider on soccer culture but are you serious?

Cheating? It was an infraction with a proscribed penalty which he calculated worth taking, like an intentional foul in hoops. Cheating?

I really want to get into some name-calling directed at the people making these complaints (I was leaning towards whiny and ghey) but I would also like to hear from people who follow soccer. Does anyone find this beefing justified.

I guess that from the whiners' perspective, handling the ball is not just another foul since it goes against the fundamental principle of the sport. I can't think of a similar example in hockey - you'll see a defender jump on the back of the opposing team's forward to stop a breakaway, knowing fully well that it'll cost his team a penalty shot... but even that doesn't compare to putting your hand on the ball. It's more like goaltending in basketball.

But I'm with Daft - anyone in the same situation would do the exact same thing, no question about it. Not sure you can even prevent your hand from getting in the way of the ball.

I prefer fish to beef..... however, the penalty for handling the ball isn't death.... it's a penalty kick (which if dude hits game over) which was missed and the next game he sits out. So he can't play during the semi's. If the penalty is too light change the penalty...... Allow 2 penalty kicks and a 2 game sit out which includes the finals..... I realize it goes against everything the game stands for but France played the WC because of a handball, and there have been others during the WC. If he didn't handle the ball I'm sure the other defender behind him would have...... so either way it's a done deal.

I guess that the sanction is harsh enough since penalty kicks go in at a really high rate. Just sucks to be Ghana and experience a total reversal of the situation like that.

We feel for you Ghana. See you in 4 years.

If the penalty is too light change the penalty......

That's it in a nutshell. If you can't handle what happened, your complaint is against the rulemakers, not the player.

I did look into this a bit further and some people feel it should be like goaltending in hoops. It just gets ruled a goal anyway. Fine. Whatever. But that's not the current rule so shut up.

One positive thing to come out of this: I now have a team to back. Uruguay (or as I call them, you-are-gay). It's my way of telling whiny, sour-grapes bitches to stuff it.
