If your a hockey fan, then going to a game live or on TV should be looked upon as entertainment only. Winning as many games as you can doesn't really matter that much. Just make the playoffs and take it from there. The numbers below will show how much more important it is in the NBA to finish as high in the standings as you can during the regular season compared to the NHL.
This sample goes back 15 years. Reason I did this was I lost 3 heavy favs. to begin MattyRain's contest and was done 6.95 units. Two #1s and a #2 seed. Not watching much hockey in years my mind forgot how the NHL playoffs usually works. Everyone seems to be on equal footing. If you have a hot goalie, more power to you.
This record is for first round matchups only which involves 8 in both leagues every year. Example being 1 vs 8, 2 vs 7, 3 vs 6, and 4 vs 5. The winning records below represent the higher seeds dominating the series but much greater in the NBA.
NBA 100-20
NHL 80-40
These numbers aren't as significant in relation to the the number of the #1 and #2 seeded teams that lost.
During the last 15 years, in the NBA only 2 #1 and 1 #2 seeds has lost in the first round. (57-3 record total) In that same time period, the NHL has had 8 #1 and 15 #2 seeds lose. (37-23 record)
The number below shows you the average of the final 4 teams left in relation to their seeded number. Example is say final 4 team left in the NBA playoffs are seeded 1,2, 4, and 5. Added up = 12 divided by 4 = 3.0 average.
NBA seeded number average of a final 4 team is 1.62. NHL is far higher at 3.17.
TV and hockey just don't go together as well as the other 3 majors sports. Haven't been to the Flyers game in quite awhile but nothing like hearing the clanking noise of a shot off the crossbar or seeing ice flying up in the air from 2 players racing to get to a potential icing play and coming to an abrupt stop.
Even though the Flyers don't have much of a chance to win the Cup this year, usually the area is pumped up for the playoffs every year. This year seems much different in only the die hard fans can be seen. Stevek, I know what your doing right now!
