I was reading Robyn's thread below about Sarah Silverman and it got me to thinking about what's funny to me. My earliest "adult humor" was watching Martin Mull as Barth Gimble on Fernwood Tonight. I loved the way he played that character. He was in love with himself and almost oblivious to anyone around him. The best part was when he'd make a condescending remark toward his dim witted co-host Jerry or when he himself would be oblivious to his own narcissism. ironically, I've never cared for him in any other role. My top funny guys from Saturday Night Live (I'm sorry but women generally don't make me laugh although I will grant you Sarah Silverman has the potential but she gets caught up in trying to be one of the guys like most female comedians and it dumbs her down) are listed below and their opposites..
1. Phil Hartman - Tragic end to a great comic character actor
2. Mike Myers - Multi talented and multi faceted but he's faded with his latest movies
3. Dana Carvey - More than just a great impersonator. He creates a whole persona.
4. Will Ferrell - I know he's overexposed now but again I love the Narcissistic , blithely oblivious type characters he plays ala Ron Burgundy
5. Bill Murray - Again, the smarmy know it all who everyone loves to hate. Who doesn't love Stripes?
Overrated
1. John Belushi - If slapstick or physical comedy turns you on, I guess he's the guy. I find that humor dull and never got him.
2. Chevy Chase - If falling and tripping over things makes you laugh, he's your guy
3. Gilda Radner - Nice lady but didn't make me laugh
4 - Adam Sandler - You've seen one movie you've seen them all
5 - Al Franken - Stuart Smalley was funny...the first time. To create a movie around him was akin to stealing money.
