so did 300 wins. until don sutton came along and then sportswriters rethought it for a decade or so...


nothing is set in stone in baseball stat-lore anymore, not after the steroid age and not after Sabermetrics became widespread

same with 3,000 hits when you got 26 year 43 year olds hanging on to just accumulate for milestones....

3000 hits gets you in. It has always been that way and will continue to be that way. Unless you've been caught juicing or gambling. It is as simple as that and I thought most people understood that. I mean ffs Wage Boggs is in the hall.

I've just about reached my limit of arguing baseball with a Canadian. Especially if you are going to imply that Wade Boggs only made the hall of fame on the back of an arbitrary number like 3000 hits. He was a 12 time All-Star and 5 time batting champ.

Archie, that's partially my point as well. Biggio surpasses Damon's offensive production in every way and Biggio played the majority of his career at a typically weaker offensive position.

look at the hall of fame 2nd basemen and catchers "stat wise"..... Biggio blows many of them away
 
Fans vote in all stars. You could put Ryne Sandberg on the ballot next year and he'd start for the NL.

The cranky old writers vote for the HOF. They aren't going to keep a guy with 3000 hits out. Hits are different from home runs.

What you are saying is basically, should Damon get 3000 hits somehow, he will be the ONLY player not to get in? This is ridiculous. Don't mention Rafi, please. We know why he's not in.

I'm not arguing about how great a career Johnny Damon had. I'm arguing about the importance of 3000 hits. Were you fuckheads asleep when Jeter did it early this year? Everything shut down. It was quite a big deal.

Come on brother! You were misled! You had I think it was the second worst ERA of any starter in the NL! Nobody else would have given you a 2 year what 13-14 million contract!

You've got some old timers like Rogers Hornsby and Bobby Doerr that compare favorably to Biggio... but that's about it really when you look at power and BA.

The more I look at these numbers the more I thing Craig Biggio is a freaking LOCK. Like maybe first ballot.
 
I'm also not partly saying he WOULDN'T get in for 3k hits.... because old sportswriters are dumber than fans in many ways and there is an east coast/espn read (boston/NYY) Bias in baseball.

I stand firm that he could play till 47 and get 4200 hits 140 a year.... and i'd say he had a very very remarkable career.

a very good career. very notable career..... but he was never GREAT

baseball HOF says it is about HONORING EXCELLENCE

Damon just was never close to excellent even in his prime...

sorry that's just my 2 cents and opinion...

And I'm saying that just because everyone with 3,000 hits has made it previously doesn't mean that everyone with 3,000 will make it until infinity.

If ever there was a case of someone not making it despite having 3,000 hits it would be Damon. He played in relative obscurity for half his career, was never better than the 3rd best hitter on teams after leaving KC. Never won a batting title. Never won a Silver Slugger. Never won a Gold Glove... in fact was a punch line in the field. Never was more than an afterthought as an MVP. Made only TWO all-star teams.

He's got a shit ton of steals too. His numbers are very nice. He's had a great career.

I don't think he'll ever make the HOF though.

Because Jeter was a difference-maker on a WS championship team and is widely-viewed as a HOFer. Every player who reached 3000 made it to the HOF because they were great. Damon has 3 20-HR seasons,no 100-rbi seasons, 1 200-hit season, and 5 seasons of .300. Oh, he made 2 AS teams, and received MVP votes 4 different years with a high of 13th. Stat-compiler in my book.
