I know they have been discussed here before (Phelps anyway,) and I did have limited knowledge about these wackos, but I had no idea the extent of their hate.

After seeing the hoopla about them stating that Robin Williams is in hell, I read up, and looked at their web page Godhatesfags.com

I thought it must be a joke...satire...parody...something...nope

They even have a clock in their "numbers" section counting how many persons have been cast into hell during your time on their page.

Apparently no one takes them too seriously, but as someone raised Baptist (American, not Southern) , what an embarrassment. Of course no Baptist churches will recognize them. I guess no one does either as their membership is even lower than what I knew...amazing 40 people get so much press. The media (who are all going to hell too apparently) should just ignore these nutjobs and stop giving them press. It is so ridiculous that part of me still refuses to believe that site (and their others) are not a joke.

I almost feel guilty for giving them some sort of acknowledgment by this thread.

can you gives us the coles notes version of American VS Southern baptists? At the end of the day aren't they both hard core in their beliefs?

The Southern Baptist Convention is more conservative in its beliefs than the American Baptist Church. The Southern Baptists teach that the Bible is without error, that "all Scripture is totally true and trustworthy," and the American Baptist Church teaches that the Bible is "the divinely inspired word of God that serves as the final written authority for living out the Christian faith." The Southern Baptists teach that everyone must accept Jesus as Lord and Savior or face an eternity in Hell; the American Baptists teach that people are "called to radical personal discipleship in Christ Jesus" but do not directly say they must accept Christ in order to be saved. The Southern Baptists do not allow women to become clergy and condemn same-sex relationships, while American Baptists have women clergy members and allow churches within their association to be "welcoming" communities, which means accepting of gay people and same-sex couples.

I took that from a page on line but sounds about right. I know in the church in which I was raised, there was no Evangelical type of calling out, waving of hands, or speaking in tongues during the sermons or whatever, but that really has nothing to do with theological differences. We were "allowed" to dance and play cards. ha...not sure if that flys in the Southern Baptist church. Bottom line is I don't feel qualified to speak much about the theology, but I do know that American Baptists are far more liberal than the Southern counterparts.

IAG did you watch Louis Theroux's films about them? He did 2. Fun stuff.
No, but when I was researching last night I saw that he had two. I wanted to watch, but it was already bedtime so it is on my list!

Ray-there were some posts about them when their head Phelps died a few months back, and maybe something about them protesting someone's funeral. I don't think it got too involved though or I would have googled them and been shocked.
