Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin has two torn ligaments in his right knee -- the anterior cruciate ligament and the medial collateral ligament -- and will be out for an extended period of time, perhaps the rest of the season.

Coach Dan Bylsma said Malkin and doctors are still looking at options for treatment, but surgery is at least a good possibility. Surgery could require months of recovery time.

Malkin was injured during the second period of Friday's 3-2 win over Buffalo when he and Sabres defenseman Tyler Myers collided along the end boards. He had an MRI this morning, yielding the diagnosis, which reached Bylsma just as the team was ending practice at Consol Energy Center.

Malkin was playing in his first game after missing the previous five because of a sinus infection. The Penguins already are without their other All-Star center, Sidney Crosby, who is out indefinitely because of a concussion and has missed the past 12 games.

"You're talking about Evgeni Malkin, the quality of player that he is, a guy who's won a scoring title and a Conn Smythe [Trophy as playoff MVP]," Bylsma said. "After anticipating him getting back in the lineup and healthy back in the lineup, this obviously is a difficult injury for him."

Bylsma called the play on which Malkin got injured "a freak thing" and said there didn't seem to be any intent to injure by Myers, who is 6 feet 8, or any misstep by Malkin that left him vulnerable.

The Penguins, who have won five games in a row, play an afternoon game Sunday in Washington.

I watch like MAYBE 10-15 Pens games a year until the playoffs. I'll watch another 5-10 Blackhawks games... Beyond Pen's/Hawks regular season I only catch a parts of only a handful of other games.

I'm not a real fan

Malkin wants to be the man in Pitts, but will never be the man in Pitts. He's the Jaromir Jagr and Sid is Mario. It's as simple as that. Guy is super talented though. Look for him to be moved out of Pitts within 2 years and after his knee is fully healed.
